Super size fibroid and nerve problems!

I've been on about this before - but I could do with advice from someone who has been in the same boat and has had a hysterectomy. I found out yesterday that my fibroid is about the size of a coconut - and my uterus is the size of a grapefruit - so some serious fruit invading my body! I have no problems with bleeding at all - but I have some pretty awful back pain and bowel issues due to where the fibroid/ uterus are sitting. I have had quite a few months of horrendous constipation - and loss of feeling in my rectum - which is getting gradually worse. This can lead to very embarrasing situations - where if I don't go to the toilet when I feel I need to pass wind - I could mess myself! Not great! Have talked to my GP (I am contantly on laxatives - fibroid is partially obstructing my bowel) - and she says that all will go back to normal post hysterectomy - she says the problem lies with my nerves being pressed too - sending the wrong signals to my back passage! Anyone else had this and had the hysterectomy? Did everything go back to normal in time??
Thanks in advance!

I know I am having a full abdominal hysterectomy including removal of the one ovary I have left - position and size of fibroid make it difficult for any other way - I was diagnosed after an MRI scan - so I think it will be more than 3 weeks recovery for me! I'm pretty sure I will lose weight too - I feel huge!

Thanks for replying! I'm glad to hear the surgery has helped you - I am a bit worried about the op - but I really can't keep going on the way things are now! I know how painful operation recovery can be - this will be my third surgery (second abdominal). I just want to get 'control' back in my bottom! That and an end to backache which has seriously cut my travel down - can't sit on some seats for more than a few minutes without excruciating pain. Pain killers are the only way I can cope right now. Hope your recovery continues to be good!
