Supermarket Delivery Services

Wondering in anyone has had experience of supermarket delivery services?

I have been looking at the Ocado website that delivers Waitrose products.  I am wondering how they compare with Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose themselves?  They seem to offer a pretty good range of products.  But, who is the best for actually delivering when they say they will, and delivering what has been ordered?

Obviously, I am thinking of the few weeks post op when I will not be able to drive.

Many thanks,

Susie

I did - but I live in the US and used Safeway. They were great- had tons of products and delivery fee was between 6-12 dollars. I loved this service and it helped so much....

Used Tesco yesterday - they were great.

They have a special offer at the moment - a month of deliveries with no delivery charge.

      Hi Graham:

Many thanks.  I did look at my local Tesco site recently, placed an order, but they said they could not deliver for several days, same with Sainsbury!  Looks as though I shall have to order about a week in advance.  I even tried pleading with them both, said I was housebound and waiting for hip surgery, with no food in the house, and they said they could do absolutely nothing to accommodate me.  I m guessing that this is the same throughout the UK - several days to a week before delivery!

      All the best,

      Susie

Oh Dear.I am afraid all the supermarkets need 3-4 days notice..I have just done a huge Tesco shop and it is being delivered on Sunday.  They are busier than normal because of Christmas.  I know it is a personal thing but Tesco has always come up trumps for me as has Waitrose( as I order twice monthly for a 92 year old friend).   I have read comments about Tesco ready meals that aren't so good but Waitrose ready meals are fine.  By far the best tho are M and S ut you need to get to the shop.  i did before the op so had tasty things to have on my return home.

Don't give up on the oredering on line as it is vital for us on our own and I am 'out in the sticks'.

      Hi Ali:

I have just signed on with Sainsburys and Ocado.  Took a look at my local Tesco - 7 days!  Will register with them and Ocado, and give them all a try.  I am realy ore intreted in good quality ready meals for the first 10 days after the op, and hopefully, some level of quality in green vegetables, such as sliced runner beans and petit pois.

In general, I prefer to buy my meat and fish fresh, although some times I do freeze, but don't fancy it after it has thawed.  That's the California influence again, I'm afraid.  I eat a lot of salads.  Once I am driving again, I will probably rely on delivery for the large, bulky items that I do't want to be lugging around.

I have had Tesco ready meals, and almost always been ill afterward.  Not only are they uninteresting and bland, but my fear, and that goes across the board, is whathappens to food durig transit and afer delivery to the stores.  The guidelines are there, but adherence varies from one store to the other.  The other problem that I ahve observed is that people will remove food from the chillers and freezer cabinets, and then discard them anywhere in the store.  I suspect that a lot of this is then picked up later when it has spoiled and put back into stock.  Very scary.

Best to buy fresh, and if possible from the farm shops.

The other thing that really get to me is runner beans, which I love, that are in season here, but still being imported from Kenya in Tesco!

Rant over - I guess if you want fresh, you pay for it, and you go to the upper end of the market.  The trick is to find out who is best for what, and then shop accordingly.

      Best regards,

      Susie

Yes, you are right.  Currently Tesco is quoting seven day delivery.  I ran into this problem when I was ill last year, with absolutely no food in the house for the weekend.  No one would deliver 4 - 5 days, even then!

Let me know how Ocardo is....I appreciate what you say about ready meals  and have not bough them from Tesco..but often buy from M and S and they are fresh not frozen..I then freeze because of the practicality when I came home from op.  We are lucky and have a  weeekly openmarket  and I do buy fresh fruit and veg, meat and fish there. But  I feel, well know, one might pay well over the odds for a Farmers Market and having volunteered and worked at a local Country market know the prices are horrendous for the privelege. ( can't spell need some wine),

Very interested in the Ocardo delivery.

      Reagrds,

      Susie,

Oh yes, I prefer fresh from local farmers market - but just now I'll put up with supermarket food.

I am having a lot of salads as I am still trying to lose a little more weight, and loss of mobility isn't helping much.

We had a Farmer's market in Bath that I used to use.  We don't have an \\m&S here.  We did, but they closed due to lack of trade.  This is mostly ASDA and Tesco territory. And, they are the two, I try to avoid, as the quality is very much at the lower end.  Not only that, they buy and package in bulk.  So if I want a decent quality potatoe, I am having to buy a hulking great bag, most of which will rot before use, and take up far too much storage.

I did a shop yesterday, but found that I couldn;t take the pain of having to go from one end of the sore to the other, just for a carton of cranberry, or Wellch's grape juice.  These are the ssorts of things to order on inem as they are heavy, and have fairly long "use by" lives.  I haveheard that veg, meat and fish, if ordered, are at the end of their use by lives.  So best avoided until you can pick your own.

Will order from Ocado and let you know the results.  Probably next week.  It will be mostly bulk items, but I want to try their Waitrose ready meals, as well.

      Hi Alice

Ocado is great for delivering waitrose shopping - you always get a slot even at very very short notice. They have a wonderful range from the essentials though to farm fresh Daylesford and the Duchy range. We live very close to Highgrove so can buy the produce locally, but it is easier to get it delivered. In my condition at the moment anyway! Dalesford is my

most favourite - exquisite quality, organic and you can go for the day and see where it is all produced and the ethics of the farm. It has a gorgeous flower shop and spa and restaurant. We love going there and I can still manage it as it is a very short walk!! Anyway recommend ocado anytime smile

I use a lot of prawns and the no drain tuna in the three pack cans.  You can make a good Salade Nicoise with some olives, some small potatoes, I like mine with some mint added, and a little anchovy - very little as the taste is overpowering.  Re potatoes, whatever happened to the "new Jersey potatoes," while I was in the US? Jersey Royals are nothing like them!  I make my own dressings - oil, vinegar, french mustard - the stronger one, herbs and when needed, I crumble some Rocquefort cheese into the dressing (made in bulk, so that you can jsut use what you need and add the cheese.)  I quite like some of the dressings I have found in Tesco, though.

I am doing the same re salads which isn't fun in the winter!!! I am trying 'love life' by waitrose which are fresh and prepared dinners - very reasonably priced, but are very low in calories and are more comforting as they are warm in the cold months x

I have tried those sorts of meals, where the calories are counted for  you.  When I need to lose weight, I rely on counting calories.  Weigh first thing, before even orange juice and coffee.  Measure out the milk, etc., and keep a running balance of what I eat and deduct it from the calorie allowance.  I allow 1200 calories a day, and can lose about 2 - 3 lbs per week.  That way, you can eat what you want, as long as you pay for it in calories, and it give you a good idea of what you are taking in calorie wise one you have got to the weight you want to be.  It really is a much better method than the fad diets, or the drinks supplements.  The ready meal option may be good for a few days, but better to rely on counting calories.  I find it quite a lot of fun, believe it or not!

      Hi Rose:

Good post.  I have been looking at Ocado, abd have registered with them.  Will put an order through next week, as I want to try their ready meals pre op.  Will have to bulk the order up with the enormous quantities of cranberry juice and milk that I drink, and some of their Duchy products.  Dalesford, I do not know, so will take another look.

I love the Tetbury area, and used to stop for lunch at the pub near the arboretum.  I called it "The Staggering Horse,", never actually knew it's proper name.  Food was of a reasonable quality.

      Kind regards,

      Susie

I am more than happy with Tesco and the quality of their food IS good. I would also shop at Aldi if there was one if Lidle delivered their food I would have them too. Cheaper doesn't alway mean less quality I have found.  Their car park seems full of 'yummie Mummies and 4 wheel Drivers' leaving Waitrose.  I have very rarely found anything that is nearly out of date and if there ever is the van man drawes one's attention to it so will take back no quibble.  HOwever I cannot comment on the ready meals as have not had.

Good luckj with Waitrose/Ocardo..their ready meals are good but M and S are in a class of their own. I made some of mine ready for my return from hopsital.

      Best Of Luck anyway.
