Superpath Hip Replacement 3 weeks post op

hello everyone
im nervous about posting on here as I never in my life thought I'd be on a forum for patients so in some ways it is good I've learnt some humility as always thought I was indestructible as I've always been very sporty playing a lot of tennis, football, rugby and cycling as well as regular gym sessions.
Im 42 and last year after persistent groin pain that wasn't overly painful but nonetheless noticeable and wasn't going away after about a year I had an MRI scan, the results of which showed a FAI and laberal tear. My consultant told me the space between the ball and socket at one point was about 0.5mm and therefore I was too far gone to even attempt keyhole surgery and that I needed a THR of right hip. Being the cautious sole I am I had a couple of other opinions by consultants all of whom said same thing.
I kind of didnt take it too seriously as i wasnt in great pain and was still very active, playing a lot of tennis running and cycling. The most noticeable thing was during sexual intercourse in missionary when I could feel a grinding sensation in the groin and clicking. Obviously that became somewhat of a passion killer.
As time went on the pain was pain was getting more noticeable during tennis and my consultant suggested cortisone injections and sinvisc plus. The cortisone injections did great but only lasted around 3 weeks per injection. I didn't notice any great difference with the sinvisc plus.
Still up to around april/may this year I was still playing a lot of sport and walking fine. But then in June during a very brutal game of tennis while hitting a running forehand I experienced an almighty crunch in the hip and a bit of pain, not too much as I'd only just had last cortisone shot. This was a Saturday when the crunch happened.
No problems on saturday evening or sunday Sunday but the Monday when at work after being seated when I went to get up I was in agony and couldn't move. Hip/groin locked.
Since then this sensation continually happened if I bent my leg then tried to straighten it. I had an injection into a tendon that my consultant said was getting trapped and that did work but only for two weeks. I was at the stage where getting off toilet was a massive challenge. Once unlocked it wasn't too bad. I could walk ok and pretty quick. I noticed if I did no sport (or sexual relations) the locking subsided but as soon as I was more active the issue came back. My consultant told me it was a very personal choice when to have a THR but my quality of life was being affected and the aim of a THR was to improve that quality. He then told me about the Superpath technique which I loved sound of and he was one of very few surgeons who did this. I elected to have the super path and it was done on September 15.
Im 19 days post op and can walk with one crutch pretty quick but when I try without a crutch I'm struggling as hip is stiff. I can bend leg upwards well and outwards and can squat. Obviously no locking now.
my concern is I've seen you tube videos of people able to cross their legs and walking with no aids at all and in no pain. I have no pain when lying down or sitting down save for a bit of soreness where the wound is but my main worry is I do get a lot of groin pain when exercising or trying to lift my leg keeping it straight. Also when I walk the groin hurts and while other pain seems to be getting better the groin doesn't at all.
I go for my first physio appointment in two days time and I'm worried that this groin pain means something isn't right. I've gone into so much detail as wanted to explain how I was before the operation. Has anyone had the superpath and if so what were your experiences at this stage. I've read somewhere that the illopsis tendon can be damaged and of course when I was locking up before the THR I wonder if that tendon took some damage.
sorry if this is really long winded but it's all very stressful as I've never so much had a filling in my teeth let alone major surgery so I'm not sure where I should be and what I should be doing.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hey Gary,
So great to hear from you as I know you are going through such a hard time right now. Everything is going great. I actually went to spin class Monday to “test” things. My leg felt normal...not dragging and weak like it was pre surgery. I was nervous to overdue it so I pretty much stayed at level 2 ( what a wimp. Lol). I did push up to a 6 but I didn’t stay there long and I didn’t try to keep up with the faster pace either. Dr C said he preferred I didn’t do the standing positions, so only every now and then did I do position 3 having the need to get off the seat a bit. Because I still have swelling under the incision, sitting on that seat was really uncomfortable for me, and I wear padded bike shorts and use a extra pad on the seat! So I ended up sitting on my left cheek only for the whole class (45 mins). Sorry 😐 if that was TMI! I was happy I was able to do the entire 45 mins though. Interesting that you think you feel fine, but that evening I was exhausted 😴 I’m going to hold off until the swelling is better..I don’t want to aggravate anything. But, where I really always said to myself that I didn’t like spin class, but enjoyed it when it was over; I realized I missed it. I have to admit I was the only one who left the class not sweating 😅 haha.
Other than that...life is normal and I’m so happy I went the Superpath route.
Are you getting any free time for yourself? How are things going along for you? Please take care and thanks for checking in!! Good night 🌙💤😘

Dear Gary,
I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Pretty impressive you you can hop on operated leg. I’d be scared. Lol. You’ll be running 🏃🏼 pretty soon. Think about what we’ve been through!!!
Im thrilled with my progress. Did lunges with trainer today, as well as bent on operated leg (left leg behind) and was able to bend down and pick up kettlebell. Couldn’t do that a couple of weeks ago. The “normalcy” of doing every day things is just thrilling. Lol I know you can appreciate that.
Keep us all all posted on your continued success. Maybe start a new thread so more people can be educated on our experiences with Superpath.
Have a a great day!! Xo

Hi Gar,
I’m 11 weeks post op tommorrow. I can’t believe how fast the time has gone by! I’ve been pain free since surgery. The only time I’ve experienced any pain was when I “forgot” I had surgery and would get zinged 😩 by throwing my leg out to fast or to far. It’s so great to be able to bend down when I’m drop, something. ..Perhaps I wasn’t doing the lunges really low...? Balance doing them wasn’t the best..but that’s ok. it’s more than I could do before!?? I actually had to jump to pull a cord on a light fixture in a house I was showing. It’s the first time I’ve jumped..and it was ok! I still have swelling under the incision. I’m sure that will go away in time. I’m still thinking I will be able to hit tennis balls with a pro by the end of the month. 👏🏻
How are things coming along with you ? You must be progressing really really well at this point. Do you still have pain?
Have a great day! Don’t work too hard. Ha!

Dear Gary& Martin,
OMG ! Been reading some of the forums on the experiences a lot of people have had with posterior surgery. My heart 💜 goes out to them. I’m so grateful to have found a surgeon who performs Superpath. I wish there was a way to reach more people who haven’t had their surgery yet to let them know there are other options out there!!
xoxo

Haha.. .I beat you to it.. and answered already on your post to Martin. Good for Mr Cronin to take Superpath to India! If you are reading some of the other hip replacement forums on this sight, there are still a ton of people getting THR the old fashion posterior way... ouch..ouch... ouch.. and a lot having anterior as well ( but not as much). I think most people don't even know there is another option.. which is a pity. I would love people who need hip replacement to enjoy the benefits that you, Martin, and I have experienced.. along with the ease of recovery. I'm so thrilled with my surgery.. it's hard for me to believe I even had it done.. and this is 2.5 months out. .Dr C said by 9 months i wont even know i had the surgery done.. I'm sure it's still healing, and other than running and a few other extended movements, It cant get much better than this!!!

Hi Guys
Nearly 3 weeks out now and so far can honestly say the experience has been brilliant . At no point could I say I have been in pain from my new leg hardly taking painkillers occasionally if I am driving which I have from day 8 I will take a paracetamol as it can just aches slightly think thats me being a bit tense in the car though. My scar looks all healed its amazing how all that work can be done through such a small scar surely a testament to advancing surgical skills and advanced modern 'tools' from my own experience and that of others I firmly believe SuperPath is the way forward for the future of hip replacement. I have physio on Wednesday hoping then to get back to gym after taking their advice only problem is my old leg now that is giving bad pain but at least I can see that hopefully after that is done in may I should be pain free on both sides can't wait to get it done now via SuperPath of course.
