Superpath Hip Replacement 3 weeks post op

hello everyone

im nervous about posting on here as I never in my life thought I'd be on a forum for patients so in some ways it is good I've learnt some humility as always thought I was indestructible as I've always been very sporty playing a lot of tennis, football, rugby and cycling  as well  as regular gym sessions.

Im 42 and last year after persistent groin pain that wasn't overly painful but nonetheless noticeable and wasn't going away after about a year I had an MRI scan, the results of which showed a FAI and laberal tear. My consultant told me the space between the ball and socket at one point was about 0.5mm and therefore I was too far gone to even attempt keyhole surgery and that I needed a THR of right hip. Being the cautious sole I am I had a couple of other opinions by consultants all of whom said same thing.

I kind of didnt take it too seriously as i wasnt in great pain and was still very active, playing a lot of tennis running and cycling. The most noticeable thing was during sexual intercourse in missionary when I could feel a grinding sensation in the groin and clicking. Obviously that became somewhat of a passion killer.

As time went on the pain was pain was getting more noticeable during tennis and my consultant suggested cortisone injections and sinvisc plus. The cortisone injections did great but only lasted around 3 weeks per injection. I didn't notice any great difference with the sinvisc plus.

Still up to around april/may this year I was still playing a lot of sport and walking fine. But then in June during a very brutal game of tennis while hitting a running forehand I experienced an almighty crunch in the hip and a bit of pain,  not too much as I'd only just had last cortisone shot. This was a Saturday when the crunch happened.

No problems on saturday evening or sunday Sunday but the Monday when at work after being seated when I went to get up I was in agony and couldn't move. Hip/groin locked.

Since then this sensation continually happened if I bent my leg then tried to straighten it. I had an injection into a tendon that my consultant said was getting trapped and that did work but only for two weeks. I was at the stage where getting off toilet was a massive challenge. Once unlocked it wasn't too bad. I could walk ok and pretty quick. I noticed if I did no sport (or sexual relations) the locking subsided but as soon as I was more active the issue came back. My consultant told me it was a very personal choice when to have a THR but my quality of life was being affected and the aim of a THR was to improve that quality. He then told me about the Superpath technique which I loved sound of and he was one of very few surgeons who did this. I elected to have the super path and it was done on September 15.

Im 19 days post op and can walk with one crutch pretty quick but when I try without a crutch I'm struggling as hip is stiff. I can bend leg upwards well and outwards and can squat. Obviously no locking now.

my concern is I've seen you tube videos of people able to cross their legs and walking with no aids at all and in no pain. I have no pain when lying down or sitting down save for a bit of soreness where the wound is but my main worry is I do get a lot of groin pain when exercising or trying to lift my leg keeping it straight. Also when I walk the groin hurts and while other pain seems to be getting better the groin doesn't at all.

I go for my first physio appointment in two days time and I'm worried that this groin pain means something isn't right. I've gone into so much detail as wanted to explain how I was before the operation. Has anyone had the superpath and if so what were your experiences at this stage. I've read somewhere that the illopsis tendon can be damaged and of course when I was locking up before the THR I wonder if that tendon took some damage.

sorry if this is really long winded but it's all very stressful as I've never so much had a filling in my teeth let alone major surgery so I'm not sure where I should be and what I should be doing.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Good morning everyone!

?Martin: I cant believe you have a cold now!  I swear I didn't send any germs your way!  I hope you get better soon. Oh, how I understand exactly what you are going through right now.  Chicken soup, rest, and zinc! At least you have some time to recoup. I was lucky I was able to rest my cold away.

?Richard: Good luck with your ankle surgery.. its always something, isn't it??

?Gary:  Ceramic on Plastic better last longer that 15 years... I'm not having surgery at 87!  I'm sure I wont be able to play tennis by then anyway.  lol

?Just doing some work and then heading out to explore some of Scottsdale.

Have a great day everyone!!! xo

      Dear Martin

I like chicken soup but am horrified at the amount of salt and sugar that goes into cans of chicken soup!

      Cheers Richard

      Hi Richard

I know I am a label reader as well the amount of hidden sugar in àll sorts of products is criminal . I have found a good chicken and veg soup from the co op Yorkshire provendor think it's called it's reasonably healthy not tinned in a plastic thingy .

      Cheers Martin

Ps Richard are you anywhere by Lymington ?

      Dear Martin

Yes it is pretty concerning. So much food has lashings of sugar and salt added and I usually refuse to buy them however tempting they may seem. I will have a look in my local Co Op.

      Cheers Richard

      Greetings to All Post Surgery,

Here is a blow-by-blow of my day pre-and post surgery so far.  Got to the hospital  and once they took me back and got me settled, give me two Percocets which I must admit give me a lovely buzz. 😜 Till it started wearing off and then I just got really tired. They also gave me anti-nausea and anti-acid through in intravenous.   They put some heavy duty drug through the intravenous taking me down to the operating room. But I also knew that they were going to give me a spinal which Nummi from the waist down which was gone in two hours. Unfortunately they had a guy who is learning how to give the shot and after two times of it not working I put an end to that really quickly. I’m just really surprised that nobody asked me if that was OK because I would’ve said no to begin with. I remember the nurse who was helping me sit up,lay down and that’s the last I remember until I was in recovery waking up.  When I woke up it was kind of an ice pack on the hip side but I was laying on my back and not having any pain at all in my hip.  It was also kind of an ice pack on my hip. Unfortunately it took quite a long time to get me up to a room on the orthopedic floor, and I didn’t get upstairs until about 445 in the afternoon. Well PT, who was supposed to come and evaluate me, was gone for the day at five. They didn’t make me happy especially because I said to the nurse how was I supposed to go to the bathroom, and she said use a bedpan, which I said was definitely not happening. So she was kind enough to get a walker and I was able to get out of bed use the walker and go to the bathroom.  I was majorly surprise that my pain level was probably add a number one. So I’m thinking this is pretty much a piece a cake. It’s now 9 o’clock Arizona time. My pain level has increased to about four. I think mostly because the spinal is wearing off and I’m really starting to feel the normal pain but if this is what it is, I could definitely live with it. I was going to try not to take any meds but I’m not going to be a hero and take one she brings it to me. I am on a regiment Of two baby aspirin’s per day for a month. Sorry Gary no shots here, just baby aspirin. I’m pretty comfortable it’s just very hard for me to have to rely on anybody to do anything for me. So that’s actually worse than the surgery for me. as of right now. LOL

The hospital doctor came up to check me out. Everything was fine, he said the surgery went great, because very little blood. I will see Dr Chow in the morning. Along with that same doctor. Respiratory came up, and gave me a breathing machine a manual breathing machine, to make sure I don’t get pneumonia in my lungs. That’s really it for now I will check in tomorrow after I get back to my hotel let everybody know how I’m doing and how the pain level is. Oh just an interesting point, Pre surgery  after Chow  did say my legs were going to feel uneven but that they will definitely be even and that will go away. I noticed it more the first time I got  out of bed, then the second, but maybe because I felt more pain the second time around.

hope everybody is doing great. Martin I hope your cold is much better. And I just wanted to say hi to everybody, but I’ll be back in touch tomorrow! XOXO 😘

So pleased to hear from you glad everything went smoothly shame about the timing problems with PT. Thanks for all the information really helps when you are having it soon too. Have my pre op Thursday they were a bit concerned when I said I had a cold but going to see how it goes my GP was really helpful and gave me antibiotics to take if it looks like developing into something worse. Really don't want surgery postponed as it will be well into January before I could have it again and was hoping to have both done by early February but that wouldn't happen , fingers crossed and plenty of chicken soup!!!

Again so pleased you are doing well keep us posted. Sending healing wishes out to you x

Good to hear it went well. Well done for refusing the bed pan, and going to the bathroom with your walker! Unlucky you were late in the day, it was easier for me, my op was about 11.00, back in the ward in time for lunch! All the best today. (And don’t resist the pain meds, it will make you  more com for moving around.)

      Good morning all

you know you can’t get any rest in a hospital. Lol. Every 2 hours someone was in my room. Either Blood pressure, or iv antibiotics, at 10:30 when I got up to go to bathroom pain had increased to about a 5. Decided not to be a hero and took the oxy. It helped a lot.  At 4:30 when i got up pain was about 2-3 so I declined the oxy this morning. Big mistake. Went to bathroom to wash up and pain was about 7. Became nauseous and dizzy. So going to take the oxy    Remeber  that I was not bone  on bone and not really in any pain prior to surgery. So it’s bizarre to be in pain now, but of course expected. Dr Chow was in already and said surgery went fantastic. I asked how long actual surgery was and he said less than an hour. It’s so incredible, isn’t it?  I am so happy I used him..he’s not only a brilliant surgeon but a really sweet caring man. Nurse said next 72 hours will be worst, which is not what Dr Cow said. Maybe something pt tells me will help.  That’s it for now.

Martin, I hope your cold gets better so you have no delays.

Judith, you’re  right. Why suffer when I don’t have to!

gary. How are you doing ?

will post more late re: trip back to hotel. Xo

      Dear Gerry

Yes hospital stays are a bit of a pain especially if you are in a ward whet something seems to be happening even if it's your neighbour snooring. No rest for the wicked you know!

Glad that you are feeling positive.

      All the best

      Hi gerri

I had to pee in a bottle to begin with and my nurse was good looking so nothing happened for ages!!!

As for leg length i thought mine was longer. Took me about 4 weeks to adjust so dont worry about that. Its amazing we dont realise our leg has got short pre op.

Pain wise you may go up to an 8 first couple of days. Dont panic. Its simply muscles and tendons reacting to being moved around. It will subside after a couple of days quickly and will go down to around 3.

My tip would be while in bed lift your leg towards u but keep your foot on bed. So i mean bend knee towards you. NO straight leg lifting tho.

I had physio today. Im now totally normal and next three months is about getting me back to tennis at a high level and running hard and sprinting eventrually. She told me less active people would be discharged now but with me its now about getting me to competitive sports standard.

Keep us updated. Glad all went well xxx

      Hi gerri

An hour? Wow that was quick. Mine was just under 2 hours. Apparently my muscles were so tight it was hard to move them.

Try and relax about pain. Its nothing to worry about. I did worry but its just natural. I was worse than u as i just slept and i was grumpy. Now im embarrassed lol i was so grumpy.

U will be tired and stiff next two weeks but u will notice improvement.
