Suppressive Aciclovir question

Posted , 5 users are following.

So I have been prescribed Aciclovir twice daily for 6 months with a review for a further 6 months.

My question is are the outbreaks likely to re-appear as soon as i stop taking these tablets? Will i need to take these for the rest of my life to prevent an outbreak? Has anyone had experience of this would be appreciated to share.

I've been on the same medication for 8 months. No symptoms since taking it. Plus, transmission rates are significantly lowered by suppressive therapy (50%).

Consultant stated that my symptoms would start again if I came off the treatment. Which for me was frequent, hence the recommendation for daily therapy.

Likely going to be a long term medication. Grateful there is medication to eliminate the symptoms, but sadly, doesn't combat the emotional side of the condition, which I'm reminded of daily by taking the tablets.

Sorry it wasn't better news. Yes, all we can do is hope for a cure and till then, work best with the cards we've been dealt 🙄

I've heard a lot of people do get frequent outbreaks after stopping suppressive therapy. This is likely because youve had medication to help fight off the virus, rather than your body building the extra antibodies to do so.

Its recommend to wait and see how frequent your outbreaks are before starting suppressive medication as some people have one outbreak and go months or years without another.

I decided on going on the daily medication because I had a second outbreak in under a month and in my field of work, i can't be in that much discomfort.

i have been on and off suppresive therapy for around 12 years, yes as soon as you stop the tablets maybe a few week or so after you will get an outbreak and it will be severe, once this clears you should be back to regular flare ups. as the name suggests, the drug only suppresses the virus, so once the play button is pressed, the flare ups resume sadly. 12 years on for me and still an emotional wreck about it, get severely depressed when i have a flare up, and they say time heals, for me sadly it will not.

chin up, and all the best.
