suprapubic catheter advice please.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone with or who has had a suprapubic catheter Could give me some advice and do's and don't's, tips, etc etc.

I will be having one fitted on Tuesday after having this urethral catheter removed, been 29 days since this urethral one was fitted and I requested the urologist a week and a bit ago to convert me as this one was driving me mad with the infections, discomfort, physical restrictions, internal bleeding and bladder spasms, etc etc.

I requested general anaesthetic as I am quite an anxious person and would probably panic if awake.

Any advice from personal experience / medical training is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Everyone,  I had the  Suprapubic fitted two weeks ago.  Everything went well and recovered with no problems. Now that’s it’s fitted I need advice on after care, such as:

    1. Do you cover stoma area after it heals?

    2. How do you keep tubing in place? Next to stoma and along waist area

    3. Do you use StaLoc to keep tubing from sagging with weight of leg bag?

    4. Do you know of any skin sensitive tape/plaster?

    5. Any other advice.

    Thank you

USE 3M PAPER TAPE TO SECURE SP TUBING IT DOES NOT IRRATATE AND DOES THE JOB -I CLEAN THE AREA WITH PROXIDE AND USE VASOLINE AROUND THE OPENING DAILY DOES THE JOB NO LEAKING-VELCRO STRAPS R THE BEST TO HOLD THE FOLEY BAG IN PLACE-TRIAL AND ERROR WILL GET IT RIGHT FOR U

Thanks, I was using paper tape but I found the adhesive hard to remove after it get wet while showering.  I have changed to hypoallergenic tape from the Medical supply. My Uro said I don’t have to put any thing after showering as long as the area is clean and no signs of infection. The hospital put Sta-Loc to hold the catheter in place at the leg bag connection but I thought there maybe some other means.

I am presently covering the stoma with a small bandage. Wondering if others do the same.

Hi I was just wondering....the balloon does not stay down..it rides up to the stoma and sits there. Still get alot of urine in bag but am wondering if this is ok.

How do you know the balloon is up to the stoma? I have no idea where my balloon is inside my bladder. For information I had my catherer changed last week and this morning I noticed some bleeding at the stoma. It’s odd as I have never bled before even after the initial surgery. It maybe because I did not bandage it last night. Any comments on bleeding appreciated by anyone.

      Hi

I oftern bleed from my ladies area after jogging or cycling it could be friction that causes this but it doesn't last long. I also get quite a lot of weeping around the opening bit no blood.

How dI'd it feel when it was changed as I was in agony as she was changing it

Hi there! I can see the balloon right at the stoma opening.

Once in awhile I may have a little crusty blood if the catherter rubs the stoma just around the opening but not lots of blood at all. Hope someone has an answer for you.

I change my catherter out about every 2-3 weeks myself. My doctor knows I’m in medical field so I have no problem changing out catherter. Been doing it since 2012

I didn’t feel any pain when the catherer was removed. The nurse pulled it out and the Dr inserted the new. No pain at all, all I felt was the sensation something was being pulled out and same when Dr reinserted the new. Hope everything gets better for you.

There wasn’t a lot of blood. It’s just that I never experienced any blood that why I got concerned. It has not bled since so I am assuming it happens like others have commented. Thanks

Having my SPC fitted on Thursday! Im absolutely terrified, i have orher health problems and i take a lot of pain killers anyway. I worries about how im going to cope with the pain afterwards. My immune system cannot identify if something is wrong so just attacks anyway. Can anyone who has experienced it let me know how painful it is afterwards. To make things worse i have had 19 operations over the last two years and 7 of these i have gone into cardiac arrest so past myself with worry

I had it fitted in November 2017. No problems at all no pain or excessive bleeding. Didn’t take any pain med. I would take a positive approach that everything will be okay. Talk to your Urologist of any concerns you have. I was concerned to before the procedure, but it was all for nothing. Hope it goes well for you too. Think positive. Talk to the Dr.

All done and dusted, due to my other conditions i was in a lot of pain afterwards, but the fentanyl they gave me sorted it out. Discharged from hospital today. Still getting used to it. Have to have this for a while then a mitroffonoff procedure done. But already its so much easier than ISCing all of the time. Thanks for everyones advice.

Glad it’s over without any major complication. You will feel more comfortable as the days go by. I used to self cath 5 to 6 times a day. It became a chore for me. It’s a relief not have to do it. Keep positive.
