Have you been taking the meds everyday without fail? If not, and you've missed days, then that could be the problem. Also, there are two dosages of suppressive therapy. If you're not already on the higher one, then consider going on it. Alternatively, switch to valacyclovir. That works better for some. Outbreaks can still occur while on the meds regardless of any of the above, but most should be suppressed.

You are not taking the correct dosage if only 200 mg per day, unless that was a typo. For suppressive therapy with acyclovir, the CDC recommends 400 mg x 2 daily. If not a typo, then you're only taking one-quarter of what you're supposed to be taking, so no wonder why it's not working! Not helping to reduce transmission either.

A typo is a typing error, but I guess not in your case, since you said that's what your doc prescribed. Google the CDC's herpes treatment guidelines (use those words) and look under suppressive therapy. You can see all of the recommended dosages for each of the HSV antiviral meds. Acyclovir is certainly not 200 mg once daily. You are taking way too little to have the desired effect. I would complain to your doctor and show him the website!

I'm on valacyclovir for 3 months now 500mg a day. Haven't had any outbreaks at all. I have been super stressed but I am small in height and weight so it's probably a high dosage.

All the best hope you find someone who can put you on the right meds. No point taking any if they aren't working!!

My old GP said we ll start a lower doses and see how we go. It took them one year to diagnosed me!!!!It was me eventually who suggested its herpes. Now I moved and changed a surgery and new gp said if I have outbreak I should take 800 mg 3x dailly!! Its the hell a lot. Its fos shingles. I think will have to be again me who will have to find a right dose.

That's wrong of your old doctor and bizarre. Anyway, just look at the CDC site for herpes. Recommended dosages for all HSV meds and scenarios (first outbreak, episodic, suppressive) are listed. Doctors are supposed to follow their guidelines.
