Surgery?

I'm 22 years old and have been convinced I had a lump at the bottom of my back for years (I exercise a lot and it aches incredibly when I do sit-ups) anyway, it was a Pilodial Sinus. I have a small hole above my bum (sometimes looks small, sometimes looks bigger if this is possible?) I have enquiried about surgery but it's not severely bad so my Doctor said He wouldn't recommend surgery as it's not infectedd and surgery would be more trouble etc. So I don't want to sound completely superficial but it obviously isn't a great thing to explain to my boyfriend about my 'extra hole'. I was wondering if anybody knows if there is an alternative possibly plastic surgery? It is really a small hole and it's really starting to get me down and make me insecure when in the bedroom
Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Hello.
In plastic surgery you can get something called a "flap" but it still of course requires surgery that can potentially makes things worse.
I personally would not want to leave a Pilonidal Sinus cause if it does get infected it can be a real big trouble to deal with and it will get really, really painful. Of course though if you have had the sinus for years without problems then it will probably be okay to leave more so but there is still that higher chance of infection.
The fact that it hurts is also not the best of signs, normally a sinus don't hurt when it is not infected so it could be some irritation going on in the sinus that may eventually lead to an infection developing.
The surgery I would suggest is wide excision with open healing (secondery intention) as what I have found it appears to be the most effective way to rid of a Sinus and prevent it from reoccuring.
Of course I'm not a medical professional though so I would tell you to push more at your doctors for further information and the options you have.
Best of luck, these things can be monsters to deal with so I hope you get it sorted soon.

I'm actually afriad I may have Sinus myself which I think may have been caused by an infected cyst I had a little while ago in the area and it may not have healed properly afterwards.
I'm planning to get it checked out myself and see my options if it is anything.

Thankyou! Much appreciated.
It doesn't hurt all the time, Ive been going on at my doctors for years I have a lump at the bottom of my back but it seems to come and go also?
One doctor tells me it's easier to get rid off whilst I'm young and another tells me if it's not causing extreme pain leave it.
Also, do you know if it gets worse the longer it's left?
Thank you for your advice!
Jodie

I would say that it is best to try and deal with it as early as possible but again even with the best treatment it can have up to a 15% chance of reoccuring. Unfortuately there are a number of doctors who are fairly ignorent on the subject of pilonidal problems such as sinus/cysts.
On the point of it getting worse depends if it gets infected or not which usually at some point they do get infected. The Sinus can also sometimes spread and create more Sinuses which further increases infection chance. But it sounds like you have only ever had one which is good thouh still not 100% good of course.
If you decide to not get treatment you should keep it as clean as possible, wash the area daily gently and if anything does appear to come up you should search up about ointments for the area that can reduce the chance of infection.
All the best.

Hello Jodie! To answer you question about the reoccurrence of the little bump, I would have to say yes. Before I had my surgery, I would have a small bump to start with and it would eventually go away. Then a couple months later it came back but this time it drained and was more painful. I never really knew when the bump would come back so I wasn't able to schedule a visit with the doctor because he'd never see the inflamed bump. So a few years went by and the bump came back and lasted longer so I was finally able to get a doctor to see the inflammation and get the referral for surgery. I really wish I had been able to get someone to do something about it sooner, so I'd recommend you find a specialist for pilonidal sinuses and tell them your concerns now before you have more discomfort.
