Surgery experience..1st eye vs. 2nd eye

My Mom had laser cataract surgery 2 weeks ago. Everything went well. She had an IV drip for sedation. She remembers nothing. Today she had the other eye done the same way with a totally different experience. She remembers Everything and said if that eye was the first one done she would not have been so quick to do the other one. Has anyone else had this experience?

I just had my first cataract surgery a couple days ago in my right eye.

They used an IV they said just for a weak calming effect, but I think I dozed off during the surgery because it was just finishing when I woke up!

My right eye was hazy and very blurry plus there were strange big circles visible around some lights like blue LEDS, and it stayed that way for the rest of the day of surgery.

After a good long night's rest, the next morning the vision was much improved, haze and circles around lights were gone and vision had improved to 20/40-30, good enough for driving!

Today (2 days after surgery) again after a good night's rest, this morning I noticed the vision had improved yet again to 20/25 or so, varies and at times got to 20/20.

So have patience and get plenty of rest, the improvements for me happen only the next morning after lots of sleep.

Thank you for that reassurance. My Mom is just so upset because the first eye was so great immediately. I am just trying to tell her to be patient and rest. We see the Doctor in the morning.

I totally understand - I was kinda upset the first day as well, but after a good night's rest it was much improved. I hope the same will happen for your mom!

In any case, patience is required since each eye seems to act differently and the cornea can heal slower or faster for each person's eye.  Could take days or weeks in some cases.  I recommend get plenty of sleep that has helped for me!

And I agree with your mom...if I had the same experience I had the second time for my first surgery I'm not sure if I would have been able to have the second eye done after that.

I don't remember my second eye surgery being unpleasant, but I do remember I didn't think it was as fun as the first surgery.  After my first eye was done, as I was coming out of the anesthesia, I commented to the nurses how fun that was and asked if we could do it again.

Fun lol? I didn't have anesthesia that knocked me out enough, maybe that's what the problem was (I didn't have fun the first time either!).

...although it was no where near as bad as the second time...

Hospital where I had my cataract surgeries only numb the eye - no sedation at all.  They offered Ativan if you were nervous.
