Hi hello hippies. Got a letter befor Christmas saying I was unfit for surgery. So I phoned. The surgeon said I have server anemia and he could not take the risk as there could be complications and even heart failier so I need to sort that first. So been taking iron tablets three times a day. The doctors don't understand why I have anemia as I have no symptoms. So there investigating. Mean time no surgery until sorted.

Hi Heather. Did they discover this through your blood tests possibly? So sorry you have had this news today - it is so disappointing. Hopefully it won't be too long a wait - better that they get these things sorted out before surgery, they definitely have your best interests at heart.

Iron tablets by themselves wil help but even better combination is Iron with Vitamin C, the Vit C seems to make your takeup so much better., recommended to me by Doctors.

I had a situation some yrs ago now and had only 10 days warning before cancer surgery, and Dr's amazed how much my bloood count changed in just those 10 days.

Do you know what your hb level is? My op nearly got cancelled as mine was 101, the cut off for surgery is usually 110. Eventually the consultant anaesthetist agreed to go ahead as I'm 45 and otherwise healthy. I knew the problem was related to the contraception I was using and the problem had recently been sorted. Unfortunately I lost a lot of blood during 4 HR surgery and needed a blood transfusion.

Good luck with increasing your iron levels, be careful in what you eat and drink with the iron supplements as some foods/drinks can affect absorption.

So sorry to hear that your surgery has been delayed, hopefully the investigations will show why you are so anemic. I do know that it can happen so slowly that you adapt to some extent. Have the iron tablets been prescribed advised as there are other causes. My husband was anaemia because of vitamin B12 deficiency, found out at blood donor session, and needed injections to sort it
