I'm scheduled for gallbladder surgery in three days. I cant help feeling that I owe myself the opportunity to attempt to dissolve my stone..I have one large stone, as far as they know..Ive only suffered two attacks since diagnosis lat July. I know that I have a definite draw towards giving self emulsification of my stone.. I'd rather not live without my gallbladder..is it dangerous to postpone the op'..& attempt another option. .in advance for those folk in excruciating pain I do not want to appear ungreatful for NHS available treatment..but I'm so confused ..can anyone advise ..? thanks SJP

You can't dissolve gallstones on your own. And it's extremely dangerous and life threatening if any stones leave the ducts of your gallbladder. If any stones are in the ducts it makes it harder to digest food. I'm two months since surgery and I feel much better. Its not necessary to have a gallbladder. I have no eating restrictions. If you are having fears you should consult your surgeon and doctor. I think it's pretty irrational to bail out right before surgery.

Very good explanation. I would listen to ladystark7. You should not have any doubts dear. it took me 2years of attacks and pain to get my surgery. You cannot dissolve a large stone. Its not feasible. I feel great now I need no gallbladder. Don't let anyone try to change your mind. Why do you want to go through pain and suffering. Go for the surgery dear. You won't regret it.

Hi there
I agree with the other reply, dissolving stones is dangerous, also you will probably develop more.
I had my gallbladder removed and granted was very sore for a while I don't regret it, I didn't want it to become an emergency and also it eliminates the risk of gallbladder cancer.

as others have said, you won't dissolve it alone. And even if it was possible, it's very likely they would return.
I went from Zero attacks to almost daily and being hospitalised twice. Mine was blocked so bad at my first hospitalization, I was yellow and it affected my liver so bad the doctors were very concerned.
Don't risk it, get it out.
Had mine out in December, best decision ever.

Thanks everyone, this has made me feel a whole lot better. I had 1st and only bad attack back in July and was told at scan there are "a bunch" of stones. Haven't had a bad attack since just uncomfortable now and then. Have been avoiding fat ever since and lost 2.5 st in weight (which is a good thing for me). I am still awaiting appointment date for removal and I too was reluctant about having the OP but have now had my mind made up. Thanks again.

hi soozii. Did you ever get your gallbladder out? I have my appointment with surgeon on monday. Can you describe the uncomfortable symptoms you had? Thanks

Hi, I now have a date for my OP, 1st July. really nervous about it but know it's best thing to do. As I said previously I only had one bad attack initially a year ago. My symptoms since are feeling full even when I've only eaten a little, constipation, tiredness, terrible bloating and now and again a terrible pain moving from middle to under left rib which lasts about 3 days and is enough to have me laid up on my side to ease the discomfort. Eggs, spicy food or any fat are a no go for me. People that I know who have had the OP have all said this should disappear once the gallbladder is out so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Is your appointment for a consultation or for the OP itself?

Hi soozii. Thanks for the reply. It is just for the initial consultation. I have a couple of old ultrasounds. One showed stones and one didn't. I'm not sure if he will want any additional ones before the operation. I never had a super painful episode. Mostly just uncomfortable, some nausea, hot flushes (but no fever). Mine usually lasts about 3 days too! And then I may be fine for months, which is why I have waited so long. Occasionally I have a little left sided pain that comes and goes. The main reason I have decided to get it out now is because it felt like it was swelling last weekend. Scared me! Anyways, I hope the surgery helps us both. How old are you if you don't mind me asking. Sometimes I feel like I just have a dysfunctional gb more than stones being an issue. My mom said when she had hers taken out the doctor told her it was diseased (this was 40 plus years ago). He told her it had shriveled up.

yes I can go weeks between any pain but bloat quite often. I'm 53. I've waited a year for op and like you I think I've waited that long because of amount of time between flare ups. well hope you get on ok Monday. keep me updated if that's alright? Thanks
