Surgery successful: now for the bad news

Posted , 8 users are following.

Dear fellow hippies - I had my follow up visit yesterday after 8 weeks post-op .... I had my list of things to ask, however most of them were answered by you people ... I had R THR - he manipulated the leg and seemed to be pleased, but told me I had to get stronger ....now for the unoperated leg/hip ...I found this forum while I was looking for an explanation of the pains in the unoperated leg and have been moaning and groaning about it for a while now .. well .... the xray showed that, in 6 months time, the cartelidge in left hip has deteriorated so fast that L THR is needed in the near future --- in October it was just slightly visible ... how is that possible ??? a wee bit of  a bummer and I did not see that coming ... not so happy right now and feeling defeated ....next appointment is in 3 months -

Renee, it seems that sometimes the deterioration is rapid. The difference in 6 weeks for me was apalling. Altho, I have always been convinced the other registrar did not look properly. My consultant said the difference was very quick. I was not at all mobile at the time and have always been puzzled as to how it deteriorates if youre not doing anything.

Poor you, the news would certainly not be what you were hoping for. However, you have coped so well and been so encouraging to others, I am sure that you will be up and at em in no time. In 6 months time, nyou will be feeling a lot different to now, stronger and more ready. I hope you are feeling more positive this morning. Hugsz, Renee.xx

Morning Renee. . so sorry to read your news,You must be quite upset and deflated by the news.

I have heard that sometimes the other hip requires surgery because of all the extra strain it takes whilst carrying you when the original hip is damaged and waiting to be replaced. Knees take an extra bashing too and sometimes need replacing because of the length of time deteriation and operating takes. If we didn't have to wait so long maybe the damage would be delayed!

I need a RTHR. Reckon I'll need a L in the near future too.

    Good luck

    best wishes

    Westie 😊

thank you ... it makes such a difference to be able to share from the heart, doesn't it?  no one else would understand .... I see disppointment and horror on my friends' faces ... doesn't help that I have been given notice to move out by August 01 !!!

moving right along and taking it one step at a time - get myself fit and lose the extra padding ...

Oh no Renee not good. But at least the new one is fine. My left is heading that way but he hope 2 years before we think about it. I am not in any pain. My problem is the osteoporosis so they like to get in there while there is bone to work with. Today my muscles are growling as I get used to sitting lower and breaking the 90 degree rule. So another hurdle to get over on the repair journey. Bit of a rest day today. Raining so no urge to go out

    Keep improving x

Renee sorry to hear about your dilemma. I just recently had mine 2 months ago LTHR, I can only just imagine how distraught you must be feeling. Just hope things are brighter for you later and here's hoping to a speedy recovery for you later on. I'm a bigger person and I'm from New Zealand so I was looking for a site with people who have been through similar circumstances as myself and I came across this site which is so helpful with a lot of advice. Good luck for the future and I hope things get better.

Thanks Renee, to be honest I was fine after 6 weeks and I guess I put that down to being active as well as having a physical job. One of my main aims was to be walking 4 weeks after my op unaided as I was getting married which I am glad to say went off without a hitch. I do hope things go well for you tho and sorry to hear about your circumstances.

Forums are great but I'm also trying to look for similar groups or people in my area to meet up and chat and maybe have a coffee or two and have group discussions and maybe have an exercise session or a walk or bike ride which could help others socialise and make them know that they do count. Big hugs to you too. Please keep us updated. Thanks

Dear Renee - oh poor you. Of course you're fed up. The others have been so encouraging so I hope you'll find some help from the understanding sympathy of fellow hippies. I find it so helpful to know I'm not alone in my concerns - and take heart from the very positive experiences of others who have come through - just as you will. Bless you 🌺 Grace

    Hi Renee,

I understand that defeated feeling and am sorry you have to feel it. Disease keeps on keeping on and there is really no prediction about how fast deterioration will occur. Hopefully you can bite the bullet and get that other THR and be done with it.

Major surgery is rough, as you and we on this site know, and when we have more than one surgery, it can feel like an avalanche of overwhelmingness! (I realize that is not a real word, but think it fits 😀)

You can do that second surgery and thank God we only have two hips! Sure wish you the best outcome and the strength you need to regain between each surgery.

I am not yet 3 months out from my revision THR and I am weak. While in this state, it feels like I am too tired to work to regain my physical strength. However, slowly but surely strength will be regained and it is well to put some distance between each surgery.

    Hugs

Hi Dawn .... LOL on two hips ... when I asked the surgeon why the let hip went bad so fast, he answered : they are the same age !!!!

I am a recent transplant from Los Angeles ... moved back after 34 years ... I am trying to get used to the Dutch way .... no cover up when undressed for instance ... or sometimes even a dressing room or leaving the room ... very uncomfortable ... and the sort of direct way of communicating .... not too much explanation either ... oh well ... I hope you feel better soon - take your time and be kind and gentle with your self ... big hug !

      Hi Renee,

When I was ages 7, 8 and 9, I lived in Holland and have so many delightful memories! Going back is on my bucket list. Culture shock is indeed rough even as young as I was! I wish to write a few children's books about my funny adventures. Hope your adjustment goes smoothly!

Hi Dawn ... this probably is not the right place :-)  but oh boy, am I homesick !!!!   it is not the weather ( I prefer the wetness over the relentless heat of the last 4 years), it is not the people (they are nice ) but maybe the "lightness" of living in L.A. that I miss so much ...the energy ... do I sound if I am from LaLa land ???? and culture shock or sure ... but then I met people from Holland who visited L.A. and were in shock and not in a good way ....  big hug and hope you come and visit -
