Surgery, terrified of nausea/vomiting

Hi all. Does anyone have sucess stories about gallbladder removal where they didn't have problems with nausea or vomiting post-op or during recovery?

I have my surgery scheduled for the end of October and I have a terrible phobia of vomiting. As in, I have panic attacks just thinking about having surgery because of this risk. I have been nauseated almost constantly for the last year and a half but have never vomited. I finally got a HIDA scan that showed my galbladder function at 0% (no stones). I would love to feel better but I have read so many stories of people having nausea and vomiting from the surgery and/or during recovery it makes it seem like everyone has these problems.

Has anyone made it through without vomiting and with no or minimal nausea? I would love to hear your story!

Thanks!!!!

My surgery was June 30 and I had 10 days of gas pain, started with broth, jello, easy to digest foods, etc, and had no vomiting, and now I eat anything I want to eat with no ill effects.  I has stones, but also very elevated liver enzymes and pancreatic enzymes.  My nausea was central, and non food related, so no one thought it was gallbladder until an ultrasound and CT scan were done.  I am so glad I had the surgery.  My doctor said the way the gallbladder looked, it was not functioning and had likely been causing problems over the past year.

I had no vomiting or nausea but just the pain from my stitches and eventually went off pain meds after 5 days. It's been 10 months since my gallbladder removable and the pain came back 2 months ago. Pain is on a scale of 3 out of 10 not painful but you know it's there.

Hi I had my gallbladder removed in July and so far it has been a success.  Immediately after the surgery I felt better in myself.  Post op I feel brilliant the back pain that I suffered with, the feeling of sickness and sensitivity when touching my stomach has gone.  I feel well for the first time in about five years.

I was reluctant to have the surgery due to all the horror stories I was reading but I am so glad I did it.

Immediately after surgery I was in a bit of pain with the wounds but nothing pain killers didnt take away.  You will need to ensure that you rest and dont lift anything afterwards for a few weeks.  I had no sickness at all.  I did have what felt like an attack about two days after surgery which lasted for an hour but nothing since.  I also suffered with diarrhoea for a few days but they seems to have settled and only comes back if I eat the wrong food.

For about a week after surgery I ate very light meals which consisted of mainly soup and gradually started to eat more solid food.

I now eat a very low fat diet, no red meat, I have almond milk instead of normal milk and so far it all seems to be ok.  I do find that I cant eat such a large portion of food as I did before but thats not a problem.

I would certainly recommend having the surgery.  Remember that not everybody gets the same problems.  So do not stress about the vomitting as if you stress too much it may well be the cause of it.

    Good luck.

Hi I felt very sick as soon as I came round couldn't even turn my head. Told the nurse immediately injected with anti nausea stuff and within minutes the nausea stopped. Just tell them and they will help.

Thanks for sharing. Do you know if they gave you anti-nausea medicine before or during the surgery, and you still woke up feeling sick? Or did they not give you any medicine until after you woke up?

      Thanks!

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. It is very reassuring to know that there are people who went through this without having problems with nausea or vomiting, it can be done! I'm glad you were all able to recover well!

Had my gallbladder removed three weeks back and said to the anaesthetist (and just about every member of hospital staff) that I was terrified of vomiting post-op, given that my abdomen was going to be really sore 'n' all. So they gave me plenty of magic stuff when they brought me round. Had absolutely no hint of nausea whatsoever. I was beyond scared, having never had surgery before. But everything went so well, the knock-out stuff is magic, it's nowhere near as bad as you're expecting. I'd do it all again if I had to. You'll be absolutely fine, I'm sure :-)

Awww hun, i know exactly how ur feeling!!! I suffer with emetophobia too!! And panic and major anxiety attacks. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago....just make sure you tell the surgeon that you REALLy dont want to feel nauseous after waking from surgery. Ask for anti nausea meds before op and for more as soon as you wake....that helped me so much xxx

So glad you're feeling better! Unfortunately my surgery isn't until late October. I can't wait to have it over with and feel better!

It's wonderful to hear all of these positive responses- for those of us with anxiety issues, it really helps to know that yes, some problems do happen, but that it's not an inevitable part of having surgery- which is what I was beginning to beleive.

Hi everyone, I got back from the hospital an hour ago and it went great! The nurses and doctors were so nice, the surgeon even held my hand in the OR when I was getting anxious. I was in pre-op for about an hour, meeting with nurses and the anesthesiologist and answering lots of questions. The anesthesiologist was great and gave me a new anti-emetic called Emend that is apparenty the best! He also gave me an acid reducer and then more anti-emetics while I was under. Guess what? I had no nausea at all! I actually woke up hungery, and am now trying not to eat too much to make sure I don't regret it later! This is the first time I haven't had nausea in 1.5 years! Felt dizzy coming off the anesthesia and very tired but not even that sore - and they only gave me ibuprofen. So far have eaten some crackers and some oatmeal and half a banana and am walking short distances around the house kind of hunched over. The hardest part is that I want to eat everything I haven't been able to for so many months!

Thank you SO MUCH everybody for your kind wishes and amazing advice! You were all right on, and hopefully I'll continue to feel better and better!
