Surgery to clean up trochanter bursa

Hi, my 14 year old daughter is still dealing with trochanter bursitis. She had tried many things, steroid injection, therapy, chiropractor, dry needling, deep tissue massage, etc. With nothing giving her any long-term relief. Her orthopedic doctor is suggesting surgery to go in and remove her bursa and clean up surrounding tissue, her whole area is inflamed/fluid. The dr. It's telling us she is unsure if this will give any relief but hopes a healthy bursa will grow back and her problem solved. 14 year olds don't get this so all doctors she's seen are at a lost, why she has it and why it won't calm down. Does anybody have experience with bursa removal and if it's helped. Any other ideas on how to help this would be appreciated also, as we are at a lost on what to do next.Thank you

Thank you for your reply. We had another appointment with her orthopedic Dr today. She has consulted two other Drs, and they all feel this will be the next best step. Hoping this will be the end of this for her, so she can start moving like a regular teen. I'm so glad to hear it worked well for you, it gives us hope. smile

      Hi

You are not alone. And it's very upsetting to hear of your pain and frustration.

My daughter is in the same situation. She is a year older and nothing is working. Our hip specialists will not operate on her due to her age. Today we were recommended another hip specialist who doesn't treat adolescents.

So now we soldier on and try and find a specialist who will treat her and perform a bursectomy. Our sports Doctor advised that this would be the best solution to the bursitis since after 2 cortisone injections nothing has worked.

Please keep us posted regards your surgery so we are going done the same path... If someone will perform the surgery.

      Ciao all the best

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. It's very hard to find anybody else who is this young who has this. Everybody my daughter has seen have been baffled to why at a young age she got it. She just had her surgery July 14th, they removed her bursa, cleaned up the inflammation, hollowed out her fascia that was over her trochanter bone, and most importantly smoothed out the bone and got rid of some good size spurs. We believe the rough edges on her bone kept rubbing on the bursa and tendons that cover her trochanter bone which might have been why nothing we've tried has helped. Surgery went good, she is on crutches and no weight bearing on her left hip. We will not know for sure if the surgery worked until she can walk on it, but are hopeful. I agree with Connie make sure this is what she needs and keep looking for a Dr who knows about it. We've gone through many Drs, chiropractors, and physical therapist who tried to help but came back with there was nothing they can do, which is very frustrating. Keep looking into it she's to young to suffer with this. I will post later when my daughter starts walking on it more and let you know how it's going.
