Surgery tomorrow

Hi, I'm having my gallbladder removed tomorrow. I'm to be there for 7.30am and I realise it might be a good few hours before I go down to surgery ... but in general how long can I expect to be be hospital? It's day surgery. Also any tips on what kind of diet to follow in the first few days? Thanks in advance.

I was first on the list and was taken at 9am. Although had been in hospital for a week with cholecystitis prior to that. Got back to the ward just after 1 although most people return quicker. Should have gotten out the same day but needed a lot of morphine post-op and had a dodgy bleeding wound too so they wanted me to stay in that night. You should get out the same day but maybe pack a bag for 1 night stay just incase?

I'm day 13 postop today. For the first few days I just had toast mostly, and soups and rice pudding. Just gradually trying more foods but still kinda scared to try anything too fatty!

Hope everything goes well tomorrow! xx

Hi i was first on list for 8am I was out of surgery by 11am and sent home by 3.30pm.  Didn't have much appetite for first few days just tiny bit of rice and plenty fluids .. jellies were good ... you will be fine just rest for at least two weeks minimum. Hope all goes well.

Good luck for your surgery tomorrow. I had my gallbladder removed just over seven weeks ago and I am so glad I did! I have no problems at all now, after having painful symptoms for years!

You may have a wait. I had to go in for 12.30, and didn't go down to theatre till nearly 5pm, so had to stay on overnight. But you will most likely be out some time later in the afternoon. If you are in pain when you come round for recovery just tell them and they will top you up with extra morphine. And I would recommend taking pain meds regularly for a good few days. I just had paracetamol and ibuprofen. You probably won't have a great appetite, and I would suggest you don't eat too much, and be sensible for a few days. Maybe soups, toast, but see what you fancy. Avoid anything too fatty. I found I can eat almost anything, just smaller portions.

All the best for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

Patients having laparoscopic cholecystectomy are usually discharged same day. If you are on list for late in day you may be kept overnight. If there are issues, you will also be kept at least overnight.

First few days, you probably won't have much of an appetite. Stick to plain food like toast, soup, plain baked potatoes etc. First couple of weeks continue low fat diet and reintroduce foods gradually. Drink plenty water.

    Good luck tomorrow!

I had gone through laparoscopic cholecystectomy in September last year. The schedule was at 10:00 but turned out to be 17:00 due to longer than expected procedures for the patients before me. By the time I get home, it was at night and I had difficulty walking by myself. As for diet, I had bland food for about one week or so. Apple sauce, chicken broth, hard tacks (chew well), and sports drink.
