Surgical Irritation of Scar Tissue

Posted , 3 users are following.

Last December I had surgery on my ankle and foot which consists of 4 different surgical incisions, all is well except 2. They feel itchy majority of the time. Any ideas as to what it could be?

The two that are itchy are where they did the key hole surgery, yet the longer surgical scars are fine.

One last thing, what can I use to stop the irritation?

Itching around scarring is not unusual. You can try massgage, moisturisers and anti itch creams, ask your pharmacist. You could use hydrocortisone cream too possibly.

Thxs, for your reply Ptolemy. I will take your suggestion on board as I have tried them already and thinking if there is another underlined cause. Sorry for not putting this on the original statement.

Do you mean you have tried an otc hydrocortisone cream?  If so, perhaps you need a slightly stronger one to knock the itch on the head.  You will need to see your doctor for a prescription.

I will be seeing him within the next few days and my consultant/surgeon a week Tuesday. I was also thinking if the nurse may have left in one of the sutures. As it is at the back on the outside of the ankle, I can't really see because of the position. But what I can see of the surgical site it does look a little inflamed due to the irritation, but clean and healthy.

I'm glad you are seeing a doctor soon, you need someone who is able to actually see what is going on.  Perhaps there is a little infection there if it is slightly red.

      Hope all goes well Mark

      Thankyou mrsmop.

I have noticed the inflammation, but also itchy which I avoid scratching because when I do scratch it then feels sore with a stinging sensation.

But I will explain this to the constant, as this is unusual.
