surgical menopause symptoms advice please

Hello I have recently had major surgery resulting in both my ovaries being removed. 4 weeks on I am now suffering from constant night sweats which are making sleep difficult. I have replaced my duvet with a light weight summer one and keep a fan by my bed, but still wake up several times a night. Hot flushes have started during the day too and I have started feeling very low and tearful. I am still recovering from surgery, but am finding these extra symptoms difficult to manage. I am worried about taking HRT due to a family history of female cancer. Not sure what to do and would appreciate any advice. I am only 48 and worried I have years of these unpleasant symptoms ahead of me. I have been considering taking anti-depressants as I have read they can help? Although having suffered from severe depression in the past, again I am reluctant due to possible side effects. I am trying Omega 3 fish oils and calcium with vitamin D supplements, but not sure if they will help. I would appreciate any advice thank you smile

    Hi Jenny

I've tried posting a link but it's waiting for approval.

I also said that I have a friend at work who is 10 years down the line after having a full hysterectomy. I will chat with her tomorrow, she's been really helpful to me xxx I will ask her advice too, on the outside... As someone who has experienced it also, without any issues xxx

Hello thank you ladies, went to the doctor today in desperation, she prescribed Clonidine for the flushes/night sweats and Citalopram for the onset of depressive feelings that I am having. Need to go back in 2 weeks for a review. Don't know if they will work. Has anyone else tried these medications and had success? Hoping there wont be too many side effects, I have enough to deal with at the moment recovering from my op. confused

    Hi Jenny 13771,

I had a total hysterectomy at the age of 50, I'm nearly 58 now. My mother had breast cancer so I too was concerned about HRT but my doctor persuaded me that I should try for a short while to get over the shock of the operation. I did take it for 9 months and it certainly helped. I also went on Citalopram for 2 years. Learnt not to beat myself up. I had to accept that the hysterectomy would take time to completely recover from. Have tried clonidine which unfortunately for me were no good at stopping the sweats totally but they did lesson them. Good luck with this Jenny. I think all our hearts go out to you. Remember to give yourself time to recover.

Yes I've tried both as well. Citalopram great fro anxiety but never got on with Clonodine personally. I only tried it for a couple of weeks pre op but went on to HRT post op straight away and much better.

Hello Chrisy & Carol thank you for your advice. I am nervous about these new meds, but desperate enough to try them. I am still signed off work for the next few weeks, so at least I can try them at home and hopefully cope with any initial side effects. Will let you all know how it goes. Will be great just to have a full nights sleep, being tired all the time is not helping X
