Surgical socks/tights

Posted , 8 users are following.

Matron would like to ask how long do I need to continue wearing these awful surgical socks/tights. They overheat my legs and make me itchy, I am 4 weeks post op. Doing my 10/15 min walks every day and pottering about now and again but mainly horizontal most of time?

Why phyllis, they are so lovely? Lol! Usually about 6 weeks after the operation however if I'm honest I wore mine for 4 weeks and for the following 2 weeks I just wore them in bed. I think if you walk around for a little bit every hour and there's no history of DVT I don't see why you shouldn't do the same. Just don't cross your legs when sitting.

Their so lovely that when I go out for my short walk, I put dark socks over them! Many thanks for advice.

I never wore these after my surgery matron when I had gallbladder out

Should you were them all the time?or just if there is history of thrombosis

      In family?

There's more risk of DVT following pelvic floor surgery which is why they are recommended.

It's probably best to ask the nursing staff when you are due to be discharged because it appears that different consultants have differing views as to how long to wear them for.

I took mine off and gave them to the nurse on my discharge day after the operation. She didn't say I had to wear them for days let alone weeks 😲

      Hi Barbara,

I was given an anticlotting injection , and given a spare pair before being discharged. I was under impression that everyone had to wear these after surgery when rendered Imobile for a while to help prevent clots, at least until more mobile!

I wasn't told not to be mobile but to potter around a little. I went out for a walk every afternoon round my block of houses about 10 minutes of slow walking every day from the day after I got home. Neighbours got to waving at me each time I walked past their house.

I was told not to do anything for 2 weeks, thought I'd better follow advice religiously this time round, think I was too quick on my feet last time, didn't realize the extreme degree of my prolapse, so not taking any chances this time.

Sounds like you are recovering much quicker than me, I am 4 weeks post op and about ready to start going nutty, my sister are taking me out to lunch on Wednesday, so looking forward to that, just a bit worried about sitting to long. This will be a good test to see how things go as my work is hoping to have me back around 6 weeks if they can find something in the office for me!

Thanks funny Barbara. I have no intentions of being immobile. Evenif I get up

And walk around the house every hour, keep the circulation going.x

I'm not totally imobile, have been up and about round house every now and again over 1st 2 weeks , have up and down stairs house so that has kept me going . But didn't start short walks till into 2nd week.

I had an anterior and posterior repair this time, lots of stitches, mainly interior, have a very swollen bumpy bit think you call it the perineum, when I overdo it get a little spot bleeding which I think is coming from that area, I'm sure their are some stitches around there.

Managed to read 5 books over the first 2/3 weeks (Phillipa Gregory and Ian Banks), and have been watching the 'hunger games' (read the 1st book and watched the 2nd and 3rd films, just to watch the last one). It does help pass the time and am now looking at holiday brochures, but my sisters have warned me not to be booking anything as yet!

      Can stop me dreaming anyway.

Thats great that your husbands got timd off, Phyl xx
