suspect parathyroid issues

This is a query for my mother (72 years) who is currently going through tests via the NHS for Calcium levels pertaining to I suspect parathyroid issues complicated by her taking lithium for a number of years. In fact, this is a mis-diagnosis in terms of condition (i.e. she is not bipolar it would seem), but was admitted into an ICU earlier this year effectively from Lithium poisoning.

The follow-up conversations and testing seems to be pointing her towards a bone scan and parathyroid scan. The endocronologist has already mentioned surgery, which feels a little premature to me. What concerns me, is her age at 72 and whether there are alternative courses of action that we can take that make more sense. I think we are still at the diagnosis stage, but I wanted to reach out now, so that we can plan for what to do.

Doctors will want definite test results before considering surgery on para thyroid. PTH hormone blood level is high. Calcium blood level high and usually other symptoms like bone loss via density scan. Suggest you get these tests done first.  If she is diagnosed with primary hyper parathyroidism the only cure is via surgery
