suspected ovarian cyst, lots of pain

Posted , 5 users are following.

I'm in a lot of pain, left side lower abdomen. I have a gp appointment later today but I am worried. The pain came on suddenly with severe spasms regularly. If it's a cyst would the pain be worse when pressing on that area? What should I expect from my gp?

Also I know it's not appendicitis as I've already had that.

Thanks.

    Hi Vicki,

I can relate to how you are feeling, I was getting alot of pain in my left side because of an ovarian cyst. It got so bad that I couldn't lay on my left side. I've only had one ultrasound scan over a year ago but I've booked myself in for another one to see if it's grown. As mine is fluid filled, they don't seem to want to do anything about it. The concern generally comes into play with the NHS when they contain blood. I'm not sure what happenes then. You can expect regular monitoring at best to start with.

I'm sure there are some other ladies on here who can help you further.

    Good luck x

Cyst pain is funny, it is usually higher up (which is why it is commonly mistaken for appendicitis in the first instance) it can also shot across the other side of your abdomen when pressed. But a good GP should b able to feel a growth. The pain associated with a cyst is usually torsion (the cyst twists and releases blood into ur abdomen hence the pain) if u have fluid filled cysts which is the most common they monitor them and usually take them out if they get bigger than roughly 6cm, however dermoid cysts can become cancerous, so they will usually opt to remove them regardless of the size. Ask ur GP for an abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound and a referral to gynaecology.

Hi Vicki, appendix is on the right side anyway so def not that. My cyst does hurt when pressed but for most of the month it's just a dull heavy feeling. When I ovulate can be extremely painful for a few hours. The GP will probably try to say it's IBS as that tends to be the left side. You don't mention how long you have had the pain but if only a few day's constipation could be a possibility?

Hi vicki, hope you had some reassurance from your GP today - how did you get on ? I had a large cyst also ( if thats what your problem is ) and it was dealt with eventually, my GP kept dismissing me until I demanded a scan and then it was dealt with quickly within a week and it was big ! I went a whole summer in pain until someone listened to me - all I can say to you is insist on a scan if you havn,t been refered already, you have a right to treatment and hopefully your GP has already done the right thing for you xx
