Ok, so firstly i am normally and extremely fit and active person. about 3 months ago, i started getting pain in my knees whilst bending and going up stairs etc. i went for a few physio sessions who wasnt happy with the progress nad referred me to my GP for a referral. Only a few days later, my back went into severe spasm and since then i have been bedridden most of the time and on diazapem, tramadol and naproxen which are finally finally relieving some of the pain. the pain i can never describe and im not a wuss. Apart from the pain in my lower back,t here was a constant throbbing in my right calf which has now moved up to my right thigh which i suspect is scatica but over hte past few days it is also moving to my left hip. now im getting freaked out. i can walk and have great days and shocking days - bed rest if my saviour. i now have a MRI scan booked in a couple of days and my GP is fairly confident its a slipped disc but the pain on my left is now really worrying me. Any thoughts, any advice??? Thanks so much

Hi betsy. Very similar situation to yours, very active with martial arts, squash and golf twice weekly. I remember a side kick I did in martial arts which triggered a small niggly pain in my left hip. I didn't think much of it and continued with my active sporty lifestye, thinking that I can shake it off. Well, that niggly little annoying pain turned into sciatica one night after a heavy kicking session in martial arts! So much so that I couldn't even put my left foot on the floor, sharp pain all the way down to my foot. Suffice to say that I struggled to have a shower, nearly passing out with pain and no sleep at all due to discomfort in any position! Managed to see my doctor the next day and was perscribed Diclofenac, Diazapem, Salpadol and Coedine. My GP said that it will settle but keep active if you can but did not diagnose me as having a bulging disc.So I took all the pain killers and topped it up with Neurofens when I needed to and went back to Golf a few days later and then martial arts (no kicking for a while) and aquash. The niggly pain never went away and I continued to shake off with more exercise! Cut a long story short, it got worse again, had an MRI, was diagnosed with 2 bulging dics and was told to keep active but gentle and if it doesn't settle, we will refer you to a neural surgeon. Then I must have done something wrong and I think it was simply carrying in the shopiing from my car, with heavy bags of 4 x 3 litre drink bottles and beer bottles etc. Once again, the next morning I was in sever pain with muscle spasm and could not move. Now, they have referred me to surgery and having reviewed some of the forums, I don't think surgery is the answer and although I'm not going to cancel the surgery yet (have an assessment in July) until I see how I feel by then. I have watched all the videos online with recommended stretches etc. THEY DO NOT WORK AND THEY MAKE THE CONDITION WORSE! Last few days, having learnt my lesson, I have stayed away from lifting anything heavier than a pint glass, not sports at all (which is hard for me!) and generally sitting or laying in a comfortable position and NOT STRETCHES AT ALL. JUST TAKING IT EASY AND LETTING MY BODY RECOVER. I'm taking 2 x 200mg Neurofen (cheaper Ibuprofen tablets do not work!) every 4 hours and this for me seems to be the answer as I think it's working and I'm getting more and more relief from the pain every day. Hopefully I can avoid surgery, IF I'M A GOOD BOY AND DON'T DO ANYTHING SILLy! That is my best advice to you besty. GOOD LUCK.

    Hi betsy

If I tell you about my pain etc. it may help you understand yours?

I've had issues with my back for twenty four years and have gone through all stupid therapies and supposed cures including surgery - I'm writing this awaiting my next surgery!

When my discs go, my hip, knee and ankle in the particular side hurt more than my back itself. That's the nerve being compressed by the disc. My backside and hip usually feel the most pain but I also get a really tight calf and unfortunately often get cramp - you can imagine dealing with that when you are not at your most mobile! I sometimes have really painful throbbing (which can move around my leg), like a migraine but then it can feel like a vibration, basically lots of different things usually dependant on what I've done or how I've been lying/sitting - usually I've done too much.

I take similar tablets and more, some help some don't, you will discover the levels that suit you but I'm afraid only you can sort that one to ease your pain.

Try your best to waddle around, I say waddle as I appreciate your pain and the waddle shuffle tends to be the best you can do. It helped me greatly to have walking aids/crutches/sticks, and as I've had lots of trouble with my back, I have my own!

Don't worry too much, you are on the correct path and your symptoms are nothing unusual. It's not the quickest road but following the MRI, they may move you to the next stage in offering injections and physio.

Take care and don't think you're able to do things your body isn't ready for - I speak from experience.

Best of luck to you :0)
