Hey im 19 and ive got my ablation at the hospital next friday and i have spoken to the nurse and she has filled me about what happends, she says i will be awake and under local. Now i know this isnt a major op or anything but im getting really scared as the days come closer, im really not into hospitals and people messing with needles and stuff. Can some thats had it done just calm me down please :P.
I know that sounds pathetic but this worrying is just putting me off big time.
cheers

I haven't actually had one of these done myself, but have seen several performed in the past.
I just want to reassure you that an ablation is nowadays a very routine procedure, and only performed by highly specialised staff - I know initially it all sounds rather scary, but as the nurse will have explained to you, a local anaesthetic will be given at the beginning of the procedure (usually via a little cannular in your hand), and the sedative effect from that will make you feel very relaxed and not too bothered about anything that goes on!
In fact Tony Blair had one several years ago and he was back with the Cabinet after a couple of days, right as rain.
I'm sure the nurse will have explained the procedure to you and what you can expect. These days patients always have to be told of any possible complications which can some times sound rather alarming ..... but these are very, very rare so please don't worry.
Good Luck Dan, and hopefully you will perhaps hear from someone who has actually experienced one.

I had the ablation done at the beginning of this year and like you i was terrified, i suppose listening to all the risks which they have to tell you, didn't help. The procedure wasn't half as bad as i had expected, the consultant and nurses all talked you through what was happening every step of the way. You can even watch it all on the screens which i found facinating. Once the procedure is over your taken back to the ward and have to stay in bed for at least 3 hours to let the groin wounds heal. I can honestly say i am glad i had it done, i have a better quality of life now, no more svt attacks and not on any medication. I wouldn't hesitate in having it done again.
Good luck with your ablation Dan, you will be ok. After the ablation you will wonder why you worried, honest!

Hi Dan,
Great to hear your before and after comments on the ablation.
I am 43 and have been on a few different drugs for 8 yrs now and had 6-7 episodes that required me to to hospital for an overnighter.
I had a good 5yrs on flecanide with no problems but had my first biggy on sun for 5 yrs there..........so I saw alot of the same faces at the ccu unit again :? .
I am now being referred to the infirmary to see a Prof and get this done.
I am so pleased to hear your reaction to all of this and hopefully to be of of meds for good.
I too take alot of exercise (cycling and gym work) and would appreciate it if you could let me know if you are back doing it hard..cardio work.
Cheers
