I am a 49 year old male whom was diagnosed with SVT 2 years ago. I have been suffering with this condition for many years but every time I went to the Docs the SVTs had subsided and I would be told that palpitations were common and not to worry about it? Finally 2 years ago I managed to get to the Docs whom immediatley sent me to hospital and after the injection to stop the palps thay diagnosed my condition. My heart rate at this time was over 200 bpm. During these attacks I have stressed to all that I can barley walk far or climb stairs without being exhuasted or lightheaded. I have since been on all the various medications except Flecadine which I am reluctant to use therfore the hospital have now recommended I go through the ablation. I am currently waiting on a date for the operation. Can anyone advise me of the day you go into hospital do they trigger of the Palps and if so how do they do it? or how do they know what to burn away? Also how long approx are you on the operation table?

I had the ablation in March of this year, I was terrified when I went in but I can honestly say it wasn't as bad as I had imagined. The nurses and staff were brilliant, they explained things as they went along. My consultant talked through the whole procedure whilst he was doing it just to put me at ease and let me know what was going on. I watched it all on the monitors that you are wired upto. They start and SVT with the leads that are put into your heart through your groin and they can stop it just as quick. Once they have located the area at fault that is when they go in with a catheter wire and ablate the area. Mine was ablated for 45seconds. The whole opp took just over two hours. The procedure was uncomfortable at times rather than painful.. If you look at some of the entries on this site there are a couple of really good explanations of what happens during an ablation. So far so good with my ablation, so try not to worry too much about it. I wouldn't hesitate in having it done again if need be.
Good luck with yours when you get your date.
Take care
