Swallowing and fear of choking

Posted , 2 users are following.

hi everyone,

I've had difficulty eatting solid meals for the last 3 1/2 weeks since a dental visit.

NO CHOKING EPISODES

I'm currently having hypno with a family member for this.

I'm completely fine with drinks and soups and even choc cake ( what a suprise) and some solid but squishy food like pasta (rice seems to gritty for me)

I've only had 2 hypno sessions so far but I'm scared I will never get better.

I live with my partner and his family and tbh I don't always enjoy it and can get quite stressed.

I went to my mums and was able to eat ALOT better there but moving back isn't an option and I also don't really want to run from the issue I want to battle it!

I've suffered with anxiety for many years in different forms but this is the scariest symptom so far.

I constantly worry about not eatting and ending up in hospital and so on.

has anyone overcome this before?

and hints and tips are very welcome!!

Aimee

    Hi,

I had this when I was at university and avoided eating certain types of food because of it. I still do not like certain types of food like anything stringy for fear of choking. I also est slowly and really concentrate so that I feel I wont choke.

Anyway, I have to say, when I am distracted I completely forget about it. I think the more you focus on it, the worse it may get.

It may be worth remembering that when you have eaten before, nothing bad has happened. Can you pinpoint why exactly this dental visit made you feel nervous of choking? Did something touch the back of your throat and felt unpleasant? Although difficult it nay he worth digging a little deeper here to uncover the anxiety trigger.

I have got over this aspect of anxiety, you are not alone.
