Swallowing, breathing issues.

Hi All,

I have been experiences difficulty with my breathing, not gasping for air or anxious breathing feels more like restricted breathing like I can breath in all the way. My breathing feels very shallow.

My chest and diaphragm fee like it’s fatgiued or weak and that’s what is causing the breathing issues.

I’m also experiencing swallowing problems, not choking or anything but like food and liquids aren’t being swallowed properly. Like food is remaining in my throat.

I don’t feel like I have a lump in my throat or feel any pain just discomfort.

I’ve also been experiencing body wide muscles twitches mainly in the neck, stomach, arms and legs.

My doctor thinks this might be GERD has anyone else had any experience with this ?

I feel the same way. Some days l feel like l have to yawn in order to breath all the way. I don't have any twitches just pain muscle/joints. I am 41 years old 7 years ago endoscopy showed inflammation was put on prilosec last year had to clear my voice a lot, went to see ent nose/throat scope was normal except inflammation in the back of my throat. Had 2 ct scans normal then went to see gi 2nd. Endoscopy showed less than 1 cm non dysplasia barrett's esophagus. I was shocked l don't smoke quit 13 years ago...occasional white wine in the past some late eating and sometimes spicy food now l have barrett's esophagus. Was put on ppi called protonix twice a day gave me horrible stomach pain lost 23lbs in less than 6 months. Now l am on otc prevacid 15mg twice a day. Weight is staying the same 104 l am 5 feet 1 inch tall l am now under weight. I am very concerned even though my blood test and stomach ct scan ultrasound was normal. Loosing so much weight so fast? What is happening? Is the food we eat is poisoning us? So many people suffer from acid reflux it's crazy even kids. You are not alone. Go for a full physical exam ask for endoscopy. Mine is coming up this December to check if barrett's is staying the same, going away or getting worse.

For a number of the non dysplastic barretts was reversed after 3 months of ppi ( in my case it was 3 cm columnar) The ppi I was on was rabezprezole (sp?) 40mg daily. so metaplasia barretts is reversible smile

I also feel like my nose is extremely dry like a have a loss of smell almost. Using moisturizing gel. Also have you tried dgl licorice? These are best to chew before you eat. Try to avoid coffee, alcohol, chocolate, tomatoes and ofcourse spicy foods and black pepper.

I have the same problems with breathing I sometimes can’t get my top breath for an hour or so then having to yawn to get my breath, I also suffer from body twitches it could be anywhere in my body, also muscle soreness my muscles are very sore, I take 159 mg Ranitidine 3 timed a day sometimes prescribed by my GP sometimes helps keep acid at bay, I can also have strange dark thoughts connected to acid reflux which used to scare me but now I know it’s connected to the reflux , does anyone else have dark thoughts coming out of nowhere sometimes , this is an awful illness to have , I wish you all well

      Hi Jules

I just wanted to say that I do also have "dark thoughts", I put this down to my bad days when the Acid Reflux

& Gerd is really playing up. Just try and get through these days and hopefully all will be well.

It’s almost as if what is happening in my stomach affects my thoughts , like they are connected somehow, because when I’m having a good day with my stomach and reflux the bad horrible thoughts are not there, so I have accepted this as part of my illness x thanks for sharing

Absolutely, the breathing you describe is me down to a T...If I don't concentrate of swallowing and drinking I really do have a choking reflex and it isn't good....

The stomach is supposed to produce acid for the digestion to take place. I don't understand why it's causing so many issues. In my case I sometimes get something which feels like fluid building up in my throat, I get nausea and something I vomit this build up of fluid. I don't get heartburns but I sometimes get pressure on my upper abdomen/diaphram. At times I also feel light headed/dizzy. I had an episode of vertigo two months ago. I saw an ENT consultant who told me that my ears are fine and when he looked at my thoat he noticed that it was slightly irritated due to stomach acid but I am beginning to think that there is a problem with my ears and not my stomach. I don't think I have acid reflux or GERD and I hope that I don't because there's no permanent cure for it.

Hi Allan, I have every symptom that you have described. The twitching in my neck arms, hands and at night, in bed, my whole body. The feeling in your throat  that you describe is exactly what I get and sometimes I have to burp it up. All very unpleasant. My rib cage feels like I have a tight belt around it making breathing in quite a task infact your message could have been written by me. The difference is that I also have MS as well as Gerd so what is causing what.

I suffer from sjogrens and GERD, gastritis etc and I was told this could also affects many other organs ...so autoimmune is the culprit for all other issues like GERD, interstitial cystitis, interstitial pneumonia etc
