    Hi,

I'm due to start taking amitriptyline in the next couple of weeks for an alternative to propranolol and citalopram. I'm worried about taking it, does it make you sleepy straight away, I have to be able to wake up easily for work and my young daughter. Also has anybody experienced weight gain?

I see, I'm sure you will be fine. My husband was given them for a headache that lasted a week he took 20mg for a few nights in a row and was fine.

      Hi Amy,

I am taking Amitriptyline and it helps me but i am fatigued more than usual and have experienced weight gain. There is a chat on this site about the pill and most have said they have been experiencing weight gain. I guess we just have to weigh up the pros and cons, to me it has changed my life how well it is working i just have to work on my body exercise wise more now thou. From Jenny

      Hello Amy,

I take 50mg amitriptylene at 5pm, don't find it makes you sleepy straight away as I often don't go to bed til 1am. I can wake up easily after a glass of fruit juice and a cup of tea. I do suspect it has made me gain weight, 1stone so far, after 1 year.

      Take care, Anne

I have been on. Amitriptilyne 25 per night for years now, like 16 yrs..tried 10 mg myself for a while..pain level was ok..then the dr put them back up as I wasn't sleeping .....it gives me a great nights sleep- sooo important for functioning the next day...I was originally prescribed a higher  dose but I felt like a zombie all day...so 25 mg is what works for me..it's the only prescribed med I take too for Fibro and Sjogrens..,...it's usually trial and error for a while...hope it works well for you, have a good weekend..be blessed..:-) xx

Gotta say to...taking  my My  Amiltriptilyne  at 7.30 every night...I would probably sleep till 2pm if left there, but an alarm will wake me up...I do dtill feel like snuggling back in..but once I'm up and dressed etc..I feel quite fine..it dose depend on you..some can take a higher dose..some can't..but 10 mg is quite low so go for it and see...you can always have it increased if it doesn't work right...I don't sleep right away, but I go to bed anytime from 9 pm - 10.30pm and I go straight off to sleep...up for the toilet throughout the night but it's fine I still go straight back to sleep...be bossed...

No Julie I certainly didn't gain weight on taking the meds....but I was a tad overweight, I just posted to Amy..I changed my eating regime for better health and the weight just fell of me anyway...it was a huge bonus for me too..eating very healthy and not even ever feeling like a snack..:-) xx. Sorry if I'm a bit lobe in answering I'm  in Australia and I've only just opened up these emails..be blessed, have a really great weekend..:-) xxx
