Evening Treetee.   Swelling can go on for months.  I'm a year out and still swell.  Especially when I sit or stand for long periods of time.  3 months is still soon after this big surgery where there's a lot of trama from cutting bone, muscles, and the pulling and pushing to get this hip in.   Keep icing your hip. Elevate the leg too.  Are you doing exercises, walking, using aids to help walking?   Maybe you are overdoing exercising or walking.   Where are you feeling the swelling??   Wishing you all the best and God's blessings to you for a speedy recovery and healing.  Hugs 🤗. Thanks linda81469 for the encouragement. I just finished 8 weeks of PT. I do take care of my 18 month old grandson. So I'm always moving. I still don't feel like myself. I'm very hard on myself. The kicker is I'm having my right hip replaced on the 28th of this month. My Dr. is very confident I will come thru this surgery with flying colors. He said since I'm just 50 I am younger than most of his average patients. I have tons of support at home so that part will be taken care of. But I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster before and after surgery. Finding out I had severe osteoarthritis was a blow I was not prepared for.

Morning Treetee....oh man yeah that is a blow especially when you're active.  I'm 54 unfortunately for me I was born with a bad hip.  Went many years pain free and living life till about 25 years ago.   Then slowly but surely the pain kept getting worse.  I too take care of grandkids.  I have 3.  But before my surgery my youngest had to start to go to daycare cause I wasn't sure how I was gonna be.  Good thing I dislocated my first hip replacement and had to have a total hip revision three weeks later.  Was non weight bearing for 6 weeks.   Talk about an emotional roller coaster!!  I was so active before, going to the gym almost everyday, keeping up my home, taking care of grandkids and everything else in between!!  Like you I had support at home but it was hard relying on others. Prayers for you that all goes well for you and you will have a successful surgery and a speedy recovery and healing.  Hugs 🤗Linda

I am still swollen also. 11 weeks out.  So annoying, but my PT says swelling is normal up to 6 months

Thanks staceymaz. My PT said the same thing. I just have to give it time and keep icing.

    Hello Treetee4

I find if I do too much walking or exercising there is swelling.  It is still early days for you.  I am now 6 months after THR and still get swelling if I overdo it.  Osteoarthritis doesn't help either and would be painful.I have found a great secret - heated pool with spa.  I do physio in  a heated pool twice a week and spa before and after exercises  Great for physio I was taught as well as the spa helps with swelling - get those bubbles on the ailing scar tissue, tendons etc.

    All the best

    All the best.

    hi treetee,

warm welcome to the hippies forum ..

that sucks, doesn't it, to hear that the diagnosis is severe osteoarthritis ? not only in one hip but the other as well ... I was devastated and in denial for a long time ...

I ditto other responses regarding swelling - it is not unusual -

no, I was not prepared for the emotional roller coaster either ---

be careful with bending, lifting and twisting though ... how many hours a day/week are you watching your grand child? pretty soon you have 2 new hips -- that does not mean that you are not you anymore, okay .. just modified you, no more pain and better than ever !!!

be kind to your self and come here anytime okay ... we are the best people you can come to for support -

    big warm hug

Is the swelling hot and red? That can indicate a blood clot and should be checked out right away. If that is not the case, doing too much can definitely cause swelling, even at 3 months. I had almost no swelling with knee replacement and very little swelling, 1 day in hospital after hip replacement, but coming on 3 months, my ankle suddenly swelled to twice it's size. I had done stairs at my daughter's house the day before. My doctor was in surgery that day and I could not contact him. I elevated my whole leg, applied these gel ice packs I have and stayed off of it for the day. The next day swelling was down. It was surprising to me as I do not usually swell, but we have a lot of healing still going on inside, even at 3 months and if you do too much or something different it can happen. Take heed, ice it, get swelling down with anti-inflammatories and it should go down in a couple of days. If it does not or becomes hot, red or red, shiny looking, get to your doctor right away. Good luck, it's likely just the ups and downs of hip surgery. Just when we think we're doing great, pain or swelling happens as we get back to normal activities. This isn't a race to keep up with others, it can take over a year to fully heal, be kind to yourself, rest when you need it and know that you need sometime to get back to normal. Further injuries along the way just make it take longer. Try to keep a steady easy pace forward and you should be fine.

    Regards,

    Peg
