Hi,

I am 7 days out  today from total hip replacement and my leg has puffed up like a balloon.  Right to the foot.  No temp but leg is aching.  Anyone else have the same?

    Hi

    Well done with op.

I had mine last June and yes all my right leg was swollen . Took a few weeks weeks but gradually went down. Still get some swelling when I have done a lot. If your worried ring your GP.

Have you considered a stretch stocking? Also iced ace bandages could help along with elevating you leg.

    Hi

Mine did the same. You must keep moving and do your exercises as well as elevating. Mine felt tight as well. I ended up with a DVT and then a PE so if in doubt get checked out! Don't wait if you are worried x

Hi, I'm 4 weeks post op,for the first 3 weeks my leg and foot was terribly swollen, now it's not as bad,by the end of the day,the foot swells and leg is quite tight but not as bad as a couple of weeks ago.ice packs, elevation, regular pain relief, ibrufen or similar will help with inflammation. The aching seemed persistent for the first few weeks. Ted stockings definitely help. It does feel strange but it will improve, if your worried though ring the gp.hope that you recover well, don't worry it will get better.

    Hi

Am now 11 weeks post surgery.  Yes also had bad swelling and bruising.  Leg felt very tight and ankle swelled.  Had it for weeks!1  Now moving around a lot more and managing to get out walking more the swelling has gone down although sometimes ankle still occasionally swells and feels tight at the end of the day.  Think just a long process and some recover a bt quicker than others.  Hang in there. x

    Hi Lynniebell,

Notify your doctor as a precaution.  Apply ice packs to the area throughout the day and try to keep elevated as much as possible.  Also, make sure that you take something like Ibuprophen which will help reduce inflamation.

Take care and keep us posted.

    hi lynniebell,

warm welcome to this forum of hippies in all stages and all ages -

Well, there are many reasons why swelling occurs:

    1. the surgery; having tissues cut, handled and pulled around can make fluid build up in the hours afterwards. This can stay or ebb and flow for days and even a couple of weeks.

    2. increased blood and lymph flow; healing happens because there is increased circulation bringing plentiful blood cells, plasma and lymph into the area to supply nutrition and oxygen - all needed for the creation of scar and normal tissue.

great tips are given by fellow members already -

of course, when concerned or temp goes up, see your GP -

in other words, it is normal, darling --- are you on any bloodthinners?

    big warm hug

Yes, I had swelling for several weeks. It usually got worse as the day went on, and was better when I first got up. In the evening I used to rest with my leg up, and with something cold on it. Good luck.
