Swelling

This is a question for those of you who are a few weeks post op. Obviously everyone is different but, on average how long does the swelling last for. Is there a time frame I can lookfoward to?

I suppose the answer could be how longs a piece of string, it will depend on lot's of things, how much movement your doing, where the swelling is predominantly, how fit you were prior to your op etc etc there's no answer for you, everyone is soo different. So long as you keep twirling your ankles and walking as much as possible even if on a walker/crutches etc.

Obviously it's good that you ask because you do need to keep an eye on it so watch for redness, heat and hardness

Hi Jen. I am in middle 8th week post TRHR op. I've just chatted to my wife (who notices things more than I do!) and she reckons my swelling  didn't last that long and was barely noticeable certainly by end 2 nd week...perhaps a bit earlier. It will vary from person to person, nature of op etc. Exercise impt as Alexandria has said and also taking meds. Best Wishes. Dave

I did not notice swelling until I was sitting at home, it comes more at night when sitting down. I am now going to lie on the bed earlier at night. It is stopping me walking too far as I not want it swelling too much as it takes longer to go down and interfers with my exercises.

I didn’t have any swelling apart from very slightly over the wound but only what you would expect after being cut.  Nothing about the operation and recovery was anywhere near as bad as I had feared. Take your pain medication on time as directed for as long as you need it. Do your exercises. Eat well, drink lots of water. Get plenty of rest.  Don’t stress about getting into a routine of sleeping at a particular time. Sleep when you feel sleepy, read or watch tv etc when you aren’t, whatever time it says on the clock. Be patient and let your body heal. Good luck

      Anniepaint,

I was really scared of having an operation but, I have to agree with you it was not bad at all, zero pain, no bruising only the swelling when I have been on my feet or sitting maybe I am doing it too long. The worst thing was the drugs which made me feel sick and gave constipation but, even my sickness was not as bad as others. Looking foward to clips coming out on Wednesday.

The swelling last a long time. I’m 2 1/2 months post op and it’s still swollen but the pain around the incision is gone. It’s an individual thing so not all of us are going to feel the same.

I'm 24 days post op and just have some slight swelling around the incision area. Didn't have any other swelling anywhere.

I'm almost at two weeks and I really do not notice any swelling. My ankles were swollen for a couple of days , but that was all. I'm sure that I have some swelling, but to me it is minor.

    Hi, Jen.

I started a thread about this a little over a month ago as I had significant swelling following my hip replacement (I'm just over 6 weeks post-op). My swelling was so severe that I was monitored for compartment syndrome for 5 days post-op. Upon discharge, the swelling continued and I was at my wits end as I was so uncomfortable and felt it was impacting on exercising.

Good news!!! I found a gel ice pack on Amazon and with regular use, alongside elevating my legs where possible, as well as continuing to try and do the exercises your PT has set, I managed to get the swelling under control within 3 weeks post-surgery.

As someone has pointed out, it is all subjective and dependent on the individual. However, given how severe my swelling was and the fact that I never thought I would get it under control so quick, suggests that regular icing, elevation and gentle exercises are the way forward.

    Cat :-)
