SWELLING

I am one week post-op thr and doing well. No one mentioned swelling and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice to help reduce it. I realise it's still early days and hopefully it's just a time thing.

My swelling was knee & theigh ankle and foot. Shoes didn't fit for weeks.

Walking icing and and leg exercises help. Keep the blood and oxygen moving. Also purchased a air compression boot similar to hospital type. Battery operated on Amazon. Plastic air fill similar to a small inner tube . It fits over foot up to theigh. The squeezing from that also help releive pain and swelling.

I bought an ice pack from Ebay, really useful. Keep leg raised so if in bed put a couple of pillows under. Keep moving but yes it is a time thing. A week is not long. Don’t overdo the exercises. But elevation and ice are the best.

Depends on where it is, Ice and Elevate is the normal 'cure'.

Swelling is common, the operation is brutal, and the leg muscles have been moved around a lot.

Swelling also occurs in the pelvis where they attach the acetabular component, often leading to temporary leg lengthening (Leg Length Difference).

    Best wishes

I AGREE with everyone R- rest

    I- ice

    C- compress

    E-elevate

I am praying this will keep swelling down and even though you may feel better. Be sure not too over do it.

Hi Marilyn, when you’re under anesthesia you’re not aware of how they take the leg from the socket. Not to be graphic but I was so tight my surgeon said he had a hard time taking my leg out of socket. So you can expect swelling. I’m 3 weeks post op and I can assure you the swelling will go down mine is. I’m being able to put on my old jeans. Hope is in the horizon. Good luck.

Lay in bed, rest, ice, ice and more ice and do frequent foot pumps to get your circulation going.

Good luck. Better days ahead ♡

Marilyn, I invested in a large cold pack that I keep in the freezer.  And you should definitely get something to put on your incision area for swelling.  At least it really helped me.  I’m having my other hip replaced in July and glad that have the ice pack.  I got it at a local medical equipment store.  It’s soft and about a half an thick.  It measures probably 10” by 10”.    Best of luck!!  Annie
