i have swelling which I am told is normal and seems to be the same or reducing slightly. My GP says ice doesn't work but I have seen posts saying the opposite. Who to believe?

    Hi Sunnygolf 😆.

I'm now 28 days post op RTHR. I had swelling really badly (my right leg looked like an elephant) which made doing the exercises difficult due to the weight of my leg. I used frozen peas sometimes but to be honest that was merely making it feel less hot and irritated where the skin had stretched tight. I found putting my leg up when resting, especially in bed. The swelling reduced after 2 to 3 weeks and feels so much better now. (Make sure you wear the anti embolism stockings too).

    Hope this has helped.

    Good luck with your recovery.

I was always told to use the RICE approach (rest, ice, compress and elevate).

But icing was almost always done while resting  with my leg elevated so it may be hard to untangle effects.

The swelling was massively impressive though and it felt better after icing - esp when too much time sitting or standing led to pooling of the swelling in the ankle and foot.

So .. not sure where that leaves me ... I will probably continue the RICE route with my next operation next month. But .. I will ask my surgeon and PT.

Thanks for making me think about this.

My swelling wasn't really bad but I had some.  A friend told me about massaging my leg and opening up lymph nodes for drainage.  Not sure how it all works, but it sure worked for me.  I used YouTube videos and they showed how to do some massage around the groin to open up lymph nodes and then to massage thigh with upward strokes to the groin.  The swelling was gone in a day or two.  Might be worth a try.  Good luck!

    hi sunnygolf,

I had major swellin for about 3-4 weeks post-op 1st THR -- started upper thigh and worked its way down to ankles where it stayed the longest - tight as a sausage -

There are a lot of reasons for this swelling and is, apparently, normal -however when it hurts and you develop a fever, i would call surgeon and have it checked -With 2nd THR surgery I asked the surgeon to handle me with care this time and lo and behold, no bruises or post-op swelling -- not sure if this was a fluke or that he really was less forceful ----

    How are you doing otherwise?

    big warm hug

    renee
