Swelling after ankle surgery

Hello,

I had ankle surgery and my cast was taken off over a month a go.

I can stand on my 2 legs but can't walk.

Every time I exercise with crutches or stand to cook my foot swells and goes purple.  Does anybody know how long the swelling will last for?

I was cryptically told by a nurse that the last thing to go is the swelling.

Any ideas?

I am really fed up and frustrated.  It is all taking so long and progress is so slow.  The whole business has made me depressed and negative.

Uh oh. I just bought a pair of the Go Walk Skechers today. I have PT tomorrow and can finally put a shoe on my foot. She asked me to wear shoes instead of boot because my ROM and pain level are doing well. Darn, they're so cute. I'll see what the PT says. If I get scolded, I'll let you know. 😀

I'm 11wks, in a boot 2 crutches and PWB. I can also go barefoot around house with one crutch. Wow is it freeing! My husband is getting a fancy meal here and there. He's happy.

I'm happy not to have to ask for as much help. It's good to see independence in my future.

We have a vacation planned for Mexico in July. Pool, food, and drinks for 10 days.

Hopefully I won't need crutches, just take it easy. I'll just have to behave on my cocktail intake. 😀🍷

I need to reall push exercising my good leg. The broken leg got all toned up from hauling around the cast and the boot. You'd think the good leg would be super strong from all that hopping in the first six weeks. 😀

Are any of you having trouble with keloid scars? My knee, where they inserted the rod, is awful. The other two sites where they placed clamps are healing fine.

My hubby says I need a better story for my scar. 😀

Wishing you all health and healing. 💖

      Karen,

I have just bought myself 2 pairs of sandals with support.

Can't wear trainers or skechers in summer time.

Well, you did well exercising your bad leg then!

All I know is that I get a bad knee pain on my left bad leg.

I don't think I have a keloid scar but the scars I have are still rather

      sensitive to touch.

      Karen are you in US?

Enjoy your holiday in Mexico! smile

Yes I'm in California. It's beautiful and I'm so excited to get out and go and do but need to slow down and take things a day at a time.

I told my hubby that I would take back my chores meaning laundry and cat litter changing. He was thrilled!

I love seeing him so happy. Lol.

He's been a gem but he's ready for "normal" again.

      Much love and healing,

      Karen

Hello Molly, have you had a lot of problem with stiffness? I am 3 months post op going to PT. I'm able to walk now, but still get pain when I walk long distance. I'm wondering if anyone has the same problem? Hope you are doing well😀

      Hi Paty,

You are doing very well, as you are only in 3 months post op. There are long way to go. I am at the end of 6 months, and still can't walk for long distance and have pain. Doctor anf PT talk me that after 12 months you will feel normal, if everything went well.

      Good luck with your recovery!

I do not, want to alarm anyone but as my TAR has failed due to Osteolysis I feel that everyone should be aware of this potential trap when having your checks and X rays in the follow up consultantions please be sure to ask for confirmation that you are still free of this.

      Dear Helen

TAR is short for Total Ankle Replacement.

      Hello Patty,

I am now starting my post-op 5th month.  Stiffness and swelling is there but much reduced.  Yours will too.  It is great you can do as much in 3 months :-).  I can't walk long distances yet but I am OK with one crutch or without it in the house.  If I go shopping in a big supermarket I still prefer using my wheelchair.  Also the scars still pull and are sensitive to touch.

      Have a good day,

      Molly

Richard, you have really been through it. I know you always try to be positive and helpful to others but I'm guessing this is a definite rough patch for you.

      Sending you encouragement today.

Being in this forum I've learned so much and been encouraged by so many. It always helped my day.

      Take care,

      Dear Karen

Thank you for those kind and thoughtful words, much appreciated. it is a worrying time for me with the ankle on hold until I'm recovered from the hip revision on the other side which was set back by being thrown onto the floor of the passenger ambulance. As every day passes the likelihood of a good outcome for my ankle gets less.

I've got another seven days trying to move about my bedroom and bathroom non weight bearing on crutches and almost all the day I'm on my bed doing gentle exercises to regain strength in my thigh muscles and keeping in touch with the world beyond.Thank goodness for the internet and and my smartphone.

      Cheers Richard

      Dear Molly

Many thanks for thinking about me. Tomorrow officially I'm allowed to start weight bearing but although it is very tempting I plan on giving it a few more days to allow the crack to mend.

      Best wishes Richard
