Swelling after Hemmie Surgery!

Hi Everyone,

I’m on day 12 post hemmoroid surgery. I had 2 prolapsed piles removed. I’m a 55 year old woman who suffered from hemmoroids for a very long time. I replied to other discussions but decided to start my own because I’m worried about the swelling, particularly a protrusion coming from my anus that, dare I say, looks and feels like a prolapsed hemmoroid!

I noticed it the day after surgery and called my doc who said it’s definitely NOT a hemmoroid. He said when he was finished with surgery, my anus looked perfect 😏 and that this is just swelling that will subside. Well, day 12 it hasn’t subsided at all! In fact, my recovery would be stellar if not for the pain and discomfort of this protrusion. I have a 2 week post op appt with him on Wednesday so will discuss further once he sees what I’m dealing with but wondered if any of the veterans have experienced this kind of thing post op and if so, did it go away? Just to note, I did have 2 protrusions the day after post op. The smaller of the two has completely gone away but the other remains. I had 3 BM’s yesterday and the aftermath was similar albeit worse than what I went through dealing with my hemmooroids all those years so I’m hoping to God I don’t still have them after surgery! 😩

This forum is wonderful.

      Hi Omar,

Thank you so much for your reply!

I googled images of skin tags and this doesn’t look like them. This looks like a bulge. But maybe because it’s still swollen? Maybe once the swelling goes away, it will just be a flap? I can deal with that cause right now it feels exactly like a prolapsed hemmoroid! 😳

    Hi,

Just to share with you what I’ve been through.

I had mine done with an very experience TCM doctor.

I’m now 3 weeks after the surgery and I have the same situation as you.

My doctor told me that it will take time for the protruding lumps to recover as this is part of the swollen intestine. If you cut off this lumps, you will have difficulty controlling your BM and fart. He advised me to apply a kind of lotion 3 times a day and every time when I apply it, I will need to message the lumps in a circle direction.

Hope this message helps you wink

Thank you! Did your doc say it will go away? What is the medicine he prescribed?

i so appreciate your thoughtfulness to respond!

I would like to thanks Omar for his comments. Omar comments would difinately keep my morale going on. At least I know that I will have to wait for another month for the skin tag to subside (which I feel that it is another few swollen heamorriod protruding out).

      Aside to Julie,

I’m sharing this with you by an experience old Chinese doctor who treated my heamorriods. The doctor seems not to tell me much about the treatment but I was told not to worry about the new piles which I have, and I will have a nice rectum after my recovery. Most importantly don’t try to get another doctor to get rid of it because this is part of the rectum muscles. He prescribed some lotion to me without any thing written on the bottle. It looks like antiseptic cream and another bottle which looks like saline solution. I guess this is to prevent it from further swelling.

I’m now on the 3rd week after surgery and I am able to continue with my duty at work. The only worry I have is to visit a public toilet for BM because it will get very massy without a shower spray. I’m a man but I need to use my wife sanitary pad at this moment because it is still bleeding a little bit.

So, let’s keep our fingers cross for two month after surgery 🤞

Hello Mel, what is a TCM doctor, please? Thank you...I'm unfamiliar with that.

    Hi Julie

I had my surgery close to five weeks ago, and I too am experiencing what you are. I had my follow up with my surgeon about three weeks ago, and he did say it would eventually flatten out, but may never fully go away.

Of course everyone is different, based on how severe their surgery was, how many they had removed and of course the location of the hemorrhoids (internal or external).

Now having said that, as mentioned, in some cases they will subside and completely go away... in other cases they can be removed. In my case I will be having them removed on October 25th, as the surgeon suggested I wait a few months, so all the swelling can reduce naturally... and he also mentioned if they are operated on too soon, there is a chance they can return.

Of course without a visual, I can't honestly say we have the same thing, but how you are describing it, it sure sounds like it.

Probably a good thing this forum doesn't allow us to post pictures....lol... although at times it might be more helpful.... but at the same time... would go WAY beyond TMI.... lol

I do wish you a speedy recovery... as I have been through the hell fire myself.

      Thanks Zeke!

After I posted, I took a look and it appears it is starting to flatten so hope to God it’s a skin tag and not a Hemmie!!! It’s just debilitating to live like this. In pain constantly. Can you tell me, since you’re 5 weeks out, do you feel normal again?

Aside from the extra skin, aka skin tags... I am starting to feel normal again. I still have to take it slow, as I am a very active person... haven't done any lifting or jogging yet.... just lots of walking.

If you have any other questions or inquiries please don't hesitate to contact me.... I'll do my best to help.

I'm sorry you are going through this... I honestly wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Hey Julie and Zeke. Here to join the swelling "omg is this another hemorrhoid" club. 2 and 1/2 weeks post op I developed verbatim what Julie wrote in the first post here. A week later it really hasn't improved all that much. Feels/ looks exactly like a thrombosed hemorrhoid and just aches all the time. Makes sitting/ walking very uncomfortable. Other than that, I'm almost pain free at this point though, just like Julie. I think we're all just in the "swelling stage right now". The consensus seems to be that somewhere around 5-6 weeks we'll see a big improvement in that swelling but that it can take as long as 2 months to completely go down. What an absolute marathon this recovery is...

Any improvement on your ends? (pardon the pun, lol)

      Hey Pita,

I'm now 6 weeks post op, and I still have, what I'm now coining as my own technical term, 'hangy thingys' aka extra skin/skin tags. So with that said I will be having them removed on October 25th. I'm told the recovery period is about 10 days, and no where near as painful.

The painful bowl movements ceased around week 4, and the swelling has reduced drastically, to a point of being able to move around and sit comfortably. However I can still feel the extra skin in the area, and although they could easily be mistaken (visually) for new hemorrhoids, it's really just extra skin left over from where the stitches were and the swelling once was.

I've read some people just leave it, because they are afraid of the surgery, but as mentioned, told (by my own surgeon) it's nothing compared to what we've already been through.

I asked if we could have them removed now, he said, 'No, as they could easily come back'... and added it's best to wait a couple of months, to let them shrink and flatten out naturally (which they have but still no where near perfect). So I'm being patient and playing the waiting game. Which is difficult because I just want this madness over with.... but as they say, 'All good things come to those who want'. I swear, my hoop better look modelesque by the time this is over.... and if it is, I'm gonna moon everybody just to celebrate 😁

Anyway, I did finally return to work last week, and it has been pretty exhausting, considering I'm still healing, along with trying to get back to a routine.... but I'm not gonna lie... I am very happy to have had this surgery done... because as much of a pain in the ass it has been, the long term reward is worth it.

I'm pretty sure you'll get there eventually and feel exactly the same way I do.

My only advice, read up and educate the hell out of yourself on preventative measures.... because as much of a reward it will be in the long run..... I assure you, nobody wants to repeat this ever again.

      Happy bum healing 😁

      Zeke
