Swelling from broken ankle won't go down

Hello,

I broke my ankle a week ago. I am scheduled for surgery a little over a week from now. However, I'm having a lot of trouble getting the swelling to go down. I am elevating as much as possible. I cannot put ice on it because of the splint. I am taking Motrine 2-3x a day. Is there anything else I can do? I'm nervous because my surgeon said if the swelling doesn't go down she might have trouble closing the wound during the surgery

I would still put ice on it.  Maybe you will need a larger ice pack or several. You will need to leave it longer than the normal 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.  Also, ice behind the knee.

Sitting up with my legs down is what caused most of my swelling so try to keep your feet up at all times and propped with two or more pillows as much as possible.

You absolutely can ice over your splint and it also protects from direct application. I did it with a hug pack I received from a food delivery box. I had it bent in 2 when it melted me put it into the freezer like that so it was like an ice teepee. My Dr is still impressed with how little swelling I've had throughout my course. I had my 10 week appt today. Icing your splint also cools your it so it keeps the odor down smile

Hi Star, sorry to here you have now got to wait for surgery. I waited 9 days before going down for mine due to very bad swelling. The day after surgery when the consultant came to check on me, he told me that there is a window when the surgery has to be done and i just about came into it because of the swelling. The hospital staff put loads of ice into a sealed plastic bag placed into a pillow case then placed onto the cast, and did it throughout the day, so even with splint icing will help. keep elevated as much as poss higher the better and get those ice packs on...hope all goes well for you.  sx
