Swelling going down but pain level increasing

Posted , 4 users are following.

Morning everyone - I am just 3 weeks post op after a LTHR.  Up until the last couple of days my leg and foot have been very swollen and also extremely bruised from wound site right down to my toes with excessive bruising around wound site, behind calf, around ankle, top of foot and toes.  Now the swelling is going down but the pain in the aforementioned places seems to have increased, anyone else had this experience? I am constantly worried about DVT but apart from the discomfort dont seem to have any heat or redness.

    Morning Pam

May I suggest you call your consultant and ask to go in for a doplar scan. I have had a few of these over the years although nothing has ever been found. Best to be sure everything is ok. Also with DVT you don't always get pain heat or swelling. As for the swelling side of things and or the pain I have found ice packs or bags of frozen peas to be great for this. Wrap in an old cotton t shirt and place on area for 10 mins. I hope you can get yourself checked out today and you are ok.

Thank you Hailea, I have spoken to them, they have asked me to use ice as you suggested so will see how it goes.

That is ok Pam. No problem. Use frozen peas. You can always mark the bag so no one eats them because they will defrost. They are the best because they can get in the right shape for the area you are trying to cool down. I hope it helps.

Morning Pam, I also had LTHR and exactly the same problems you are experiencing, in many ways it was worse that the pain pre-op. I exercised little and often then elivated leg/foot, I also used ice packs.

I presume you are on anti-coag medication?

What helped me most was an instep sole inserted into my left shoe/slipper. I, like you, expected the swelling to have gone by 3wks but, although it slowly decreased, my led did not return to normal until 9/10wks.

Give your GP a ring just to be on the safe side but I think its just a case of time.

Take care and best wishes xx

Thank you Dot, I do have I steps which I worry prior to the hip replacement because of fallen arches so they. Old we'll help, I will give it s go.  Yes, it is so frustrating that the hip pain has gone, exercises going well but the flipping bruising is causing so much discomfort - at least it will hopefully be for a short time.

      many thsnks

Sorry Dot, I don't have my glasses to hand and apologise for the obvious mistakes in my previous reply!
