Does anyone knows if I be able to carry on to do breast strokes when I go swimming again or do I need to stop that and do front crawl???

I had a THR last year and I do a lot of breaststroke at practice.

Hi, its amazing how many different things you hear about what to do and what not to do after a THR.

I heard that I would never be able to do breast strokes ever again after the OP. But that is the only way I can swim properly I was a bit sad about it.

But what you are all telling me makes me so much happier.

Thank you for all your comments. that certainly cheered me up.

      Kind Regards

Yes it is rather unsettling. Rather destroys ones confidence in what we are told by the experts. Cheers Richard

      Hi Richard,

      you're so right.

You would think the consultants know best and when you see different ones you get different advice.

      It's so confusing.

But I love this forum, at least you hear people's experiences.

      Hi Dawn,

I wasn't thinking about breast strokes now. I was thinking more in The future, like 1 or 2 years after the OP.

But thank you so much for your reply.

I was not given any restrictions for doing breaststroke. I tried a very short swim at week 10 post op after doing pool exercises but it felt too soon, my hip muscles felt really loose. I asked the physio about it and she said to wait till 12 weeks. I did feel stronger by then and managed a half length but left it until about 6 months before I did a full length. No problem at all with breaststroke now at almost 15 months

    All the best

Well done Ann. You are really doing well.

What exercises did you do in the pool?

Did you decide to do them in the pool or did the physio?

Hi Petra, I made up my own routine in the pool based on the exercises the physios gave me in hip school which I went to 2 weeks post op. It was mainly walking backwards, forwards and sideways . I tied a pool noodle round my ankle for resistance. Also did forward and backward leg raises, side raises and squats. It was for 30 minutes only. I really liked the pool exercises and did them 3 times a week. Get advice from your doctor or physio though. We are all different and what's right for one person is not necessarily right for someone else. It's important to get advice and stay safe.

      Good luck

Hi Ann, thank you so much for your reply as it gives me something to think about to ask the physio about.
