Switching from Tamsulosin to Alfuzosin - any advice?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am currently taking one Tamsulosin (Flomax) every other day. I would like to switch to Alfuzosin as an experiment to see if it works better with fewer side effects. But, should I just stop the Tamsulosin and start the Alfuzosin with the same dosage and same schedule or alternate or ??? Any advice appreciated. I actually have few issues with Tamsulosin and have been taking it for many years, but many here say Alfuzosin is better.

    Hello Tom:

Google "uroxatral fda" and select the entry titled "UROXATRAL® (alfuzosin HCl extended-release tablets) - FDA". It is a .pdf document. Uroxatral is a brand name for the generic alfuzosin hydrochloride. 10 mg seems to be the typical dose taken once daily.

On page 2 you will see a chart that shows the plasma concentration of Alfuzosin as a function of time after a single administration of a 10 mg tablet and very importantly under "fed" or "fasted" conditions. From the document:

" As illustrated in Figure 1, the extent of absorption is 50% lower under fasting

conditions. Therefore, UROXATRAL should be taken immediately following a meal."

Unless I have my TomXXXXX confused, didn't you have a bipolar/button TURP in April of 2019. If so, I'm curious why you need to take an alpha blocker. If I have the wrong Tom, my apologies.

Yes, I did have the bipolar TURP last April, but I am still taking Tamsulosin. I could just stop taking it and see what happens. Despite the TURP I am not able to empty by bladder easily or in one try. My uro said he did a conservative procedure, didn't want me to get incontinence. So, maybe he was too conservative. I am definitely better than I was before the operation, but my IPSS score is still near 20. I am sleeping in longer stretches, but when I go to the bathroom it takes me three tries to get my bladder cleared enough to get back to sleep. So, either I am still not opened up enough or I have bladder issues. That's why I am still on the Tamsulosin.

I was on Flomax for few years, got RE, finally learned Alfuzosin is better, switched and recovered most of my ejaculate, I would say just do it, I had recently FLA in Sept/19 with Dr.K, my IPSS dropped from 25 to one, great flow, no ED, no incontinence, stopped using any drugs for BPH

      Andrew,

What a great success story - 25 to 1!! I was at 30 before my TURP, now down to about 20, but it seems most of this is from overactive bladder symptoms. I will first try to just stop the Flomax, then if I have any issues will try the Alfuzosin. I had a prescription filled but haven't taken it yet.
