Swollen colon remedies

Hello

I've had IBS since 1985, yes that's not a misprint, and in 2014 I had a Colonoscopy and was told I had Diverticular Disease.

So now it would appear that I have both at the same time, not sure if IBS has caused Diverticular to occur ?

In all that time I have had regular bowel movements which I am so thankful for having read many posts over many years and spoken with several who suffer with this over many years of dealing with IBS.

My major problem is the swollen colon, most of my swelling is in the Transverse colon this in tern pushed my stomach up and results in extreme discomfort & pain.

I get periods where the swelling backs off for no reason I can explain, then the swelling starts up again and lasts for months at a time which is so exhausting, I bet this sounds familiar to many reading this.

ONE question, has anyone found anthing that lowers the swelling of there colon either natural remedies or perscription drugs I would be very interisted to hear your remedies on this, any relief would be my dream come true.

Good luck to everone who is suffering with IBS and ALL related problems thatseem to run into each other with a host of different names.

Thanks, Derek

    Hi Derek.

Very hard to advise you what to do, I have IBS too, and mine gets worse when I'm stress, I had one month really bad, I was using my magic bullet to made my food, 2 weeks I made puree with lean meat and sparragous, o steam meat, with rice and green beans, I had been eating this for a month, after a week, I felt little bit better, I couldn't even pass water.

The best think for me, is relaxing, I'm doing therapy to help me with my stress and anxiety, I was good 2 days ago, today I start my day very stressed and my colon is acting up again.

    Good luck to you.

Ps. Do never drink aloe vera.

      Hi Janet

Thanks for the reply, yes without doubt stress triggers IBS as does arguments, worrying etc ...

My food intake is a real mixed lot, I do not have any take aways except fish & chips on my birthday ... I eat like a robot same food this week and again same next week & so on, have to say a lot is processed ! so its constant what I eat this is why its so hard to understand what or if there is a trigger food / drink that causes bad flare ups as there are periods when it backs off then terrible periods when it is so bad

I now tend to eat less at any one time but eat more often this helps to a degree, I probably should go on a softer more liquid diet when it flares up as you do.

You are correct in relaxing for sure, if you can achive a relaxed state it really helps I have no doubt that the mind rules our nervous system i.e. colon etc, so if you can do something that relaxes you it helps more than drugs.

Take good care and hope you get relief soon.

Have you tried tumeric? It's a natural anti- inflammatory.

      Hi Pindie68

Thanks for the reply, yes I have taken Tumeric only in powder form (dry) on a plain bisciut in small amounts over a couple of years with no relief but maybe need to take it in food ?

Have you noticed any improvement in colon swelling ?

Are the capsules large or thin in shape ?

I take them when I need to and the good thing is you can't taste the turmeric. The capsules are just normal capsule size. I get them from Amazon.

If you have diverticular disease then when those diverticuli get inflamed then this is what is causing you pain. Very swollen diverticulI can be infected so you might need antibiotics.

try oily fish and avoid nuts, seeds, pips and fibrous foods that can irritate the diverticuli.

P.so if you have had 'ibs' for 30 years but have had regular bowel movements all this time, then you may not actually have ibs.

      Hi

Thanks for the reply, back in 1985 when a doctor with many years experience examimed me his words ring true even now about IBS nowdays threre are so many linked names IBD, IBS ect many show simular traits.

From what I have read on many forums IBS seems to give different people different problems.

As you correctly say diet and what we put in us plays a big part to how our Colon reacts.

Am at the moment leaning towards trying Ginger extract but need to find enteric Ginger tablets / capsuls.

Derek, I have same as yourself, IBS and last colonoscopy shows diverticulitis. My visible swelling and ache is in the assending colon, right  side. Can last 6-8 weeks at a time, about twice a year or so. My present doctor won't give me antibiotics, wish he would, they were a good fast help when with my previous doctor. Now when I feel the swelling and ache I immediately start taking 20 mgs of dicycloverine hydrochloride tabs twice daily, really helps me after a few days.

Derek, It’s been a year since you first posted. If your still inquiring about IBS,  I to am an IBS sufferer. I have found long term remission over the years. I gave up all foods with flour. Pizza, bread cake etc. I also cut out sugar, sugary drinks and started to drink 6/7 glasses of water everyday under advisement from my gastroenterologist.

I was advised to take a probiotic for a period of three months while I went through this process, I was also given B12 shots.

Apparently I was not absorbing enough vitamin B12 from food. I now have very long periods of time with no IBS symptoms.

It only reoccurs when I take Antibiotics, or eat foods I ought not eat. The antibiotics kill my IBS every time, causing a flare up.

As you know, antibiotics kill all the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria in your gut when your ill. Yogurt is the best way to replenish the good bacteria, or probiotics. It just takes a few weeks unfortunately.

When this happens I take probiotics, yogurt and a pill called Colpermin. It is a pill containing peppermint oil, which reduces the cramps and bloating.

IBS patients that I know, appear to have had a bad infection in their gut at some point in their lives. This then leads to sensitivity, unfortunately the only way to eradicate it, is eat non processed foods. Stanford Hospital website has a diet plan called the Fod Map diet for anyone trying to resolve IBS. It’s really a life choice, if you want to feel well. It worked for me. I really hope it works for you. I wish you the very best of luck.
