Swollen feet on prednisolone - water tablets?

hi all

Im currently taking 40mg of Prednisolone awaiting a resection/illiostomy (unfortunately surgery has been cancelled several times for various reasons including infections, need for high dose steroids etc) I’ve been on steroids for over a year and had practically every side effect on that gigantic patient information leaflet 😉but the past few days my body has pulled a new one out if it’s box of tricks...... I have fluid on my feet, very swollen on top and they’ve become bruised, has anyone else experienced this or similar and would it be worth getting an over the counter water tabletto help? I’m way past ringing the specialist gastro nurses for advice because I know the answer “steroids do strange things to people, everyone is different”

any advice appreciated, many thanks and I hope you’re all as well as can be x

Hi, I was in hospital for 3 days on high dose steroids for an abscess, more or less confined as a I was attached to a drip. When I came home my feet were swollen and my legs tight and shiny like I had been on a long haul flight. I had to go for an ultrasound to check it wasn’t deep vein thrombosis which it wasn’t and I was given water tablets which obviously necessitated many toilet visits in a day which made going out a problem. I think It was recommended I wear flight socks and in the end with a reduced steroid dose it resolved itself in a couple of weeks. I never had any bruising or many side effects from taking steroids long term except the moon face and them taking a toll on my hair. Hope it is not too much longer for you to wait for your op, I am 5 years on from my small bowel resection, in remission ever since and no medication

      Hi Anna

thank you so very much for answering... I’ve had such a varied dose range of prednisolone over this long period of steroid dependence I think it was inevitable I’d encounter many side effects, my Crohn’s has been incredibly difficult to manage. It sounds pretty possible that Im having a reaction similar to the one you experienced- unfortunately I’ve been stuck in bed way too much recently absolutely floored with pain and fatigue so I expect this has contributed to fluid gathering. Ive made an appointment with my gp just to double check and see if I can try water tablets.

Its so good to hear that your operation was a success and you’ve remained in remission. I hope you stay well and wish you all the best. Thank you once again, it’s been reassuring hearing your story. 💟
