Swollen hip three months after hip replacement

Hello

I had total hip replacement August 24. Actually this was to replace a hip replacement that I had over 15 years ago. The old one went bad and I needed a new replacement. As I had said this was done August 24. As of today my hip is still swollen. Is this unusual?

Johnnie - re swelling, I don't think so, my uncle told me it took a year to completely settle down after his hip replacement. Dr also told me it would be a year to get to mostly better, and even then healing still taking place. Also remember that a replacement THR is double the length of surgery, they have to undo the existing THR, clean out your femur of any existing glue, screws, etc, and then insert all new components. My hip is still swollen after Feb 2015 replacement, although not as badly swollen as it was, interesting in reading other posts, I had almost no obvious bruising of my leg which I considered a bonus. Dr did tell me my first THR was like shelling a pea, he said it came away really easy, I had a really good rapport with first Dr, lucky Edinburgh patients, he is back there now from Australia, to the best of my knowledge.. 2nd THR don't know, nobody told me how easy or otherwise it went.

Thank you so very much for your response. It gets frustrating going through this. I'm still going through therapy and I'm told I'm doing well it just this swelling I'm concerned about. Thank you.

Johnnie - Much as I love Renee, she a kind gentle lady, be very selective when and if you watch you Tube vides of hip replacement, would not reccommend too close to a meal. hahahah, no I'm not tring to be funny, even me who "I just have to know" issues, you know curiousity killed the cat, and it will surely kill me, found it very hard going. I do agree with Renee it is an education.

redface you are right Lyn ... I was 3 weeks post-op at that time, on a gray Sunday afternoon and feeling achy (pain) -

Definitely not for the meek - I had not found this forum yet and had people around me who told me that it was "nothing" and I should be up and running after one week - well, I was NOT and thought there was something wrong !!!

      big hug

Darling Renee, the next one that says that to you suggest they cut off their leg with a rusty saw. GRRRRR. They have no idea, you could almost wish Karma would come and give them a kick you know where, but to be honest I wouldn't wish the arthritis, and or a hip replacement on anyone else.

    Hi Johnnie ,

Lyn's response makes sense to me  ... Are you in pain?  What did your doctor say?

How are you doing otherwise ?  Have you watched the surgery on you tube?

if not, please have a look - it gave me so much more understanding and respect for my body !!!

    big warm hug

    renee
