Swollen knee

Posted , 6 users are following.

I'm 6 days post op and for the past 2 nights my knee has swollen to double the size. I'm using ice packs but this doesn't seem to be doing a great deal. Is this normal? It's not hot or red just very swollen. Is there anything else I can do to help reduce the swelling?

It's normal! Elevate and ice. Elevate above the level of your heart if you can. But it's quite normal to have swelling in the hip, and right down the leg. For some people it's hips, or knees, or ankles. If it can swell, it's possible! Don't worry. It'll go down in its own time.

Seems rather odd. Time to see, your doctor or surgeon. Good luck

Six days is very early on the road to recovery, and early swelling is normal - have you ever seen just what they do to you in this operation?  It's brutal.

Ice packs, elevation and rest is the usual remedy.

But ... if you are concerned, and it really is very bad/not getting any better, do consult a surgeon / doctor.

    Best wishes

Hi Graham my husband watched the YouTube of the op I can't quite bring myself to do that just yet as will need the other hip doing shortly. Thank you for the tips and I'm sure it will be fine in time.

I had a massive knee too, and as the days went on, the swelling went further down to my ankles. I was told by the hospital on day 7, when they rang me, not to wear my Ted socks during the day, just at night. As the others have said, ice and elevate. All the best.

    hi happy,

A said, you are early in recovery after a major invasive surgery where you had tissues cut, forcefully handled and pulled around -

This make fluid build up in the hours afterwards. This can stay or ebb and flow for days and even a couple of weeks.

After 1st THR swelling started at thigh and made its way down to my ankle where it took about 14 days to god back to normal ... frightening sight -

I amso had a handprint bruise on back of thigh ...

With 2nd THR I asked my surgeon to handle me with care and I think he dis - no bruises or swelling to speak of ...

elevate your leg, keep doing the ankle rotations and foot pumps --

are you wearing TED stockings or on any bloodthinning medication?

take care honey, you are doing fine -

    big warm hug

      Hi Renee

Thank you for your help it's so reassuring to have people like you on a forum like this. How long was it after your first THR until you had your second? I know I will need the other one doing but I'm not getting any pain in it as yet but the surgeon had said he doesn't want my old one to put any pressure on my new one?

There were 6 months between the surgeries ... first right hip and at 6 weeks follow up appointment the x-ray showed bone on bone on left hip .. that hip was fine 6 months before ..

Happy, the decline took place so fast that within 4 weeks I was in a lot of pain - (that awful grinding OA pain) and it definitely set back the healing of my new hip ... instead of healing and repairing it had to support me almost fully ...

Don't compare yourself to others, okay - we heal at our own pace -

      please keep us posted ...

      angel blessings
