Hi kirsty, most of the time lymph nodes are not cancerous. If you feel flu sick and very unwell with a lymph node that is rock hard and does not move around, the doctors are more concerned. Its normally a sign that your body is going thru some changes like fighting an infection somewhere or an immune system that is not as strong as it could be.

Your doctor does not know if your body is fighting some kind of infection.. this is what my GP as well as ENT surgeon has said..since there is no way to know for sure, a prescription is given often for an antibiotic to see if this changes anything.. Know that if you dont feel very fluish or sick in any way that doesn't get better, it is most likely a lymph node that is going to take some time to go away. Its very rare that the mass is cancerous. An ultra sound is prescribed first. If there us swelling in the lymph nodes shown, an appt is made with an ear, nose and throat specialist. He then looks at the measured sizes of any swollen lymph nodes. They need to be quite good size before it is taken seriously, in which then he would biopsy to see what it is composed of. If the lump is even slightly moveable or rubbery, it is not a cancer.
