Symfony lens halos

Posted , 46 users are following.

This summer I had cataract surgery in both eyes and opted for the Symfony lens implants, including a toric lens in the astigmatic right eye.

My experience, two months out in left eye and two months out in right eye: Distance is crisp and colors are sharper. Daytime driving is noticeably easier.

Nighttime driving is a problem; severe halos around headlights and streetlights, like starbursts coming at me down the highway and concentric circles particularly in red lights. I also experience the same to some degree with bright images on a dark background on the television screen. Not as intense as with driving, but noticeable halos. My ophthalmologist says they will go away in time, but I am not yet convinced. There has been no improvement yet.

Computer work is fine, although I have increased font size a bit for less eye strain. Need 1.25 to 1.50 reading glasses for smaller print in books and on labels. I have residual astigmatism in the right eye, which had a toric lens implant. This may require treatment with Lasik.

Considering the expense of the lenses, I may have been better off with mono-focal lenses and continued glasses, which would have been covered by insurance. So the jury is out with me.

My symfony lenses 2.5 months ago. I use to drive at night now I can’t. It’s way too dangerous because of the halos, sun burst and glare from lights, even traffic signals. Straight in front of me vision is good, side vision limited with false shadows. Doctor says nothing can be done. I am so unhappy - wish I had kept the cataracts

      Hi cheryl20310

Unfortunately sticking with cataracts not an option once they affect vision to point where vision can no longer correct with glasses - which was my case at 53.

How is your daytime vision with Symfony?  Have you had your optometrist check your prescription?   If all is good with daytime vision that is positive and regrettably the night time vision is the compromise with premium lenses.   After a year I still see the concentric circles around certain light sources although glare and starbursts better now than when I had cataracts.  I do drive at night and learned to adapt and ignore the circles.

If your vision isn’t great during the day either you should pursue with your doctor to find out why.  If no satisfactory answer or resolution you might want to see someone else about exchanging the lenses.

Nighttime glare remains bad after 18 months. Carefully choose known routes for night driving as glare can obscure street signs. Some help with

nighttime anti-glare glasses. Would recommend you try.

    HI team,

Need all your suggestions here..... I am 35 and had a car accident which damaged my right eye(Retina detachment and vision could not be restored 20/400) I was operating with one eye fine till last few months.. my vision gotten worse and doctor said there is tiny cataract in my good(left) eye causing this... He is suggesting to go with Symfony lens... but after reading the above experiences I am really worried... I am ok to set for distance vision and wear glasses for reading... but having halos and wont be able to drive more difficult.. can you guys provide your suggestion what to do in this ? I am going to discuss with my surgeon again on the options... but please throw your thoughts sad.... I just want my vision back.. Please note that I am a software engineer and work on computer whole day... please please respond

Just a suggestion vjkrish - you might want to start a new discussion/thread - that way you’ll get more people weighing on.

I take it from your comments you have no vision in one eye due to an accident?  Your good eye has been diagnosed with a cataract?   Cataracts can take years to develop to the point of needing surgery- usually when glasses or contact lenses can no longer correct your vision better than 20/40.

I would suggest if your eyes can be corrected with glasses you delay surgery till it becomes necessary.  Also given you have one eye I would personally not consider a premium lens like Symfony.  They work best when implanted in 2 eyes.   First recommendation though is to hold off any cataract surgery until necessary.

Sorry to learn about the terrible experiences you are going through.

My suggestion will be to get a good monofocal lens instead of a Symfony lens. You want to be able to get the best vision you can, at day time and at night time, with glasses as needed. It is easier to use progressive lens glasses, if needed, for reading or for intermediate distance than to fix the possible night vision issues with the Symfony lens.

Thank you for the suggestion.. After reading all these I am also leaning towards Monofocal rather than symfony.. I have happy to wear reading glasses... so if I put on my readers will it make the far vision blurry ? For computer also do I need readers if I put monofocal.. you can reply to main thread

With a monofocal IOL, you can target it for one of 3 focus ranges: distance, intermediate (computer), or near.  You may need glasses for the other 2 focus ranges than the one you choose.

For you intermediate might be a good choice to get good computer vision, but you will probably need glasses for distance/driving and reading.  Or you could target for good distance vision, and would probably need glasses for computer (+1D or so) and reading (+2D or more).

Yes - while reading glasses will make you nearsighted and will make far vision very blurry.  Progressive eyeglasses are also an alternative that offer distance vision on the top and near/reading at the bottom of the lens.

      Hi Kalyan

      How old are you?

Until what distance can you not see clearly?

Do you see the concentric circles around light sources at night?

Are you getting the other eye done as well?  I had both done and felt the same way after the first eye.  If so, it does get better!

How far out until you get the other eye done?  I am in the U.S.  From what I have read on these forums most that reside in the UK or Canada even takes time to get the second eye done.  In the U.S. my second eye was done 2 weeks after the first.  I did not have positive thoughts with only the first eye done as I saw blur.  My doctor assured me it would get better once the second eye was done things improved greatly and almost immediately.  When the first eye was done it was done for distance, the second eye was done for reading (as I did not want to wear cheaters).

How soon you get your second eye done depends on many factors, but in most cases it's ultimately your decision. The condition of your second eye is important too. If it's not bad, I would not personally have an IOL implanted at all.

If you go with an EDOF or multifocal lens, they do work best if done in both eyes. My surgeon had my second eye scheduled for about a month after the first. However, the cataract in the second eye doesn't yet affect vision and the combination of wearing a multifocal contact in that eye, plus the multifocal IOL work very well together and I cancelled the second surgery.

I would personally advise waiting until you first eye is stable and you are comfortable with the side effects of your IOL. Maybe the night artifacts won't bother you, maybe you'll hate them, but 2-3 weeks isn't really enough time to know this. You might want to use another Symfony, you might decide to go with a monofocal, you might decide to blend with Restor or another traditional multifocal. You might want mini-monovision. There are so many possibilities.

At 2-4 weeks, you eye is still healing. I wouldn't want to make that decision until my first eye was fully healed and I knew exactly what I'd end up with. In my case, my best vision didn't happen until a few weeks after I stopped all the eye drops (at about 8 weeks).

      Hi kalyan

You are in similar boat as me.  I am 42.  Diagnosed in July 2017.  So I have pulled through an year.  Did you get the surgery done in the US or in India?  What was your prescription prior to cataracts?

So you do not see the circles yet.  But Sue.An had reported starbursts until they cleared and the concentric circles started showing?

How far can you not see clearly?  With Symfony set for plano they say you should see clearly from arm's length (24 to 30 inches) to infinity.

How much is your vision affected in both eyes?

Kalyan, I saw star burst with first eye and it only got worse with the second eye.  I see a halo then star burst around lights day and night around car lights, street lights, moon, stars, lamps, ceiling lights. It’s been 3 months and no better.

Hi Maria, I am in the US (California) and I think it is up to the doctor and patient.  My doctor, Robert Maloney is a top Lasik surgeon, and he recommends 2 weeks later, so that is what I did.

That is too bad--I was excited to see that Maria (a few posts above this) had improvement after the second Symfony but I guess that isn't the case for everyone.  What does your doctor say?

There's not much that can be done.  The risk is too high.  My doctor is very skilled and I trust him but the lenses have problems. In my opinion there are too many of us complaining about the same types of problems not to realize something is wrong with the Symfony lenses.

Mine has been the same as yours it’s been over three months and no improvement, even reflection with The sun off of a oncoming car windshield is blinding!
