Symptom pointers for aging males

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 67 and male. I am looking for a general guide to the early symptoms of serious illnesses to which most males, living in Britain, who are over 65, may be liable. I am not a hypochondriac. To date medical advisors have not been able to point me to such a guide. Does anyone else know of such documents? I am not looking for general health practice pointers, which are more commonly found.

Have you been to your Surgery's Well Man Clinic?  They check the sort of thing that you are thinking about, blood, blood pressure, prostate etc..

You should have your eyes tested regularly too.

I have posted a link to the NHS website which is quite comprehensive.

Thank you Mrsmop. The Five Health Symptoms men shouldn't ignore of NHS Choices is a good first list. Have not heard about a Well-man clinic with my local GP group. Should I phone them and ask them if they have one? Have just turned down a Free Eye Test because I currently do not have enough money to pay for any new specs should I need them, because I will not get another free eye test for 2 years, so prefer to go when I really perceive a problem.

As Mrs Mop says the eye test can tell other things about your overall health. If you find you do need glasses, I got mine online for twenty five pounds. You do need your lens prescription from the optician though.

Some opticians are better than opthers. Since my last eye test in January at Boots I have had two problems found. One was noticed by a Junior doctor at the blood pressure clinic the very next day. Boots said it was something they don't check for as they only check the health of the eyes!

The other problem  I noticed myself and phoned the hospital eye clinic for an appointment. It is probably Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAAION) rather than Glaucoma. I am still waiting on more tests.

Vincent, you really ought to have your eyes tested.  You don't have to buy specs if you can't afford them but the Optometrist can tell a lot from looking at the back of your eye and, if necessary, refer you to your local eye clinic.

Some Opticians offer a free eye test anyway.

You could telephone your surgery, or pop in.  Ours has all sorts of posters up on the walls and also leaflets that you can take to read.

Thank you Mrsmop for further advice on Eye Tests and Man MOT. I have contacted the latter.

Has your doctor checked your BP and blood glucose for you? If your waterworks are becoming a problem ask your GP for a DRE and a PSA  test. That would get three  Biggies out of the way. Most surgeries should be doing Well Man Clinics or you could pay for a BUPA or similar health check. Opticians can often pick up on a wide range of problems in cluding brain tumors.

There are now national screening programmes for colon cancer and abdominal aneurysms for your age group. Google for the bowel cancer screening kit. For the aneurysms you should have automatically been contacted when you reached the age.

If you don't smoke, limit drink and exercise a lot is in your favour.

    Good Health.

Thank you Yollie but if you Google it, it tells you it is a scam and a fraud and, needless to say, very expensive.

Vincent has already commented that he cannot afford to buy glasses at the moment.
