Symptoms of uti and vaginal infections are they due to AV or something more sinister?

The constant burning, abdominal discomfort and low backache are driving me crazy. I am sure I am not the only one suffering. Last year I saw a gynae and urologist. I had my womb examined under GA and bladder examined by camera. Nothing suspicious and yet my symptoms still persist. Last week I had urine and vaginal swabs taken and they came back neg. I told the nurse I have AV and am using replens moisturizer. She told me everything looked fine down, the vagina looked normal and no dryness except I had some upper discharge she thought I had thrush but the test came back neg. This cannot be right I do not want to go and see GP again as I do not want to use hormone cream as previously it did not suit me. I am happy to suffer in silence if I am sure there is nothing sinister going. I have been suffering from these issues for years but they are getting more troublesome now that I am 70. Just wonder if anybody can relate to my problems. I do not want to have further invasive examinations unnecessary. The gynae seems to dismiss my concerns. Thanks

marie, I am your age, but have other age related problems. Don't ave UTIs or bladder problems, but there was a woman who posted here in the past named Shirley who surely did have them. She seemed at her wits end then was finally prescribed Trimethoprim which brought an end to all the problems. She posted it somewhere. You could try to find the post, I suppose, but there are probably a lot to slog through. I happened to write the name down (am keeping a notebook now) in case any new women had the same "mysterious" issues.

It sounds as though you need a more understanding and helpful doctor! You could discuss this med with whatever doc you are seeing. Might work for you as well. I'm not a believer in silent suffering if there a possible solution 😉

Wondering what you mean by the hormone cream not suiting you. Did you have a bad reaction to it? I have finally started using it and find it quite effective, but I have atrophy. Sounds like you are doing better than I am in the dryness department. But clearly something is wrong. Best of luck.

Hi Marie, I'm the same age with the same symptoms. The burning is awful, extremely painful. I tried oestrogen gel, but it made the pain worse and made me so swollen. I saw a gynae who said my skin was very fair and very fragile. I am currently seeing a dermatologist and using a strong steroid cream, I was very inflamed and the inner labial skin was breaking up and ulcerated. That was approx eight weeks ago, and am now using Oilatum, Simple soap to wash with, and still the steroid cream. He has referred me to another specialised dermatologist, but the appointment isn't for another eight weeks. VA is very painful, and post menopausally we need oestrogen , the cream version is very weak, I am trying that as well, cant sit down and its gone on for years. Maybe you could ask your Dr for estriol cream and try that if you haven't done already, no one should suffer in silence.

Hey Marie, don't want to alarm you but have you been checked for ovarian cancer? Some of your symptoms are the same as I had before they diagnosed me with ovarian cancer.

But, it could be other things as well. Anyway, I had ovarian cancer and had a complete hysterectomy, and that was six years ago. So now I have VA and the best thing I have found for the burning and discomfort is a product called Gynatrof. You do not need a prescription. If you are here in the States, you can order it from Amazon. It does not contain estrogen.

    I sure hope this helps.
