Tailbone Discomfort With Hemorrhoids

I have had hemorrhoids since the birth of my children over twenty years ago now. They come and go and with treatment they clear... until recently. I have had a very uncomfortable few months and they seem to just not quite clear. I have visited the doctor and after an examination was given steroid suppositories which ease them but are not clearing them. Some days they are quite good and other days they are hideous. I also have tailbone discomfort when I sit for a period of time. Just a very dull uncomfortable ache. Just seeing if anyone has the same and is this the signs that I will have to have them removed? I have upped my fibre, drinking loads of water, exercise etc but still suffering. What was the point when you decided that enough was enough and had them removed?

I had tailbone discomfort and could not sit comfortably at all until I saw a colorectal surgeon. He said to have the hems removed, but to see a pelvic floor physical therapist first. She helped me realize that my hems were not the cause of the tailbone/sitting problem. It was tightening of the pelvic floor muscles.

Fast forward 3 years later, I still have the Gr. 3 & Gr. 4 internal/external hemorrhoids, but with the help of a skilled specialized pelvic floor specialist I do not have the nerve pain. The nerve pain was radiating into the hems, and I thought they were the cause of the problem. Turned out afterall, they are not.

Feel free to ask questions of me, but I hope you will do a little research on pelvic floor nerve issues and how they affect hems.

    Best wishes,

    Susan

Hi Susan and thank you so much for your reply. That is really interesting and perhaps something I should look into sorting. Interestingly I have done Pilates for years now but fractured my knee and damaged ligaments back in November and haven't been to class. I think my issues have been since not going to Pilates where we concentrate a lot on pelvic floor.... I am now on the mend with my knee and was planning to return next week. But I think I will look into doing some constructive work around that now. I certainly want to avoid surgery as I have read nothing but not very positive experiences or results from them. So I want to do anything I can to avoid it.

This sounds like my issues. I don't think my grade 1 hemorrhoids are causing sitting discomfort and pain in rectum. I Can feel that my muscles there are tight and when stranding up or walking I have zero symptoms.

What kind of pelvic relaxation etc did you do and how long did it take to see some progress?

i would avoid surgery at all costs if you can. the only reason surgery should be considered is if you are losing a lot of blood a lot of the time and if the pain stops you from living a daily life

I really DO NOT want surgery even the banding so I'm trying to resolve the issues without resorting to this.

Doctors only seem to want to remove them but I want to look into every avenue to avoid this. As mentioned in the previous posters reply perhaps some serious look at pelvic floor strengthening will help.
