Take ovaries or leave them?

Hello, I finally have my date for hysterectomy 11th November.  The consultant has asked if I want to keep my ovaries.  He is trying to sway me towards removal.  I am not so sure.  I have heard horror stories about HRT etc.  Consultant says if we leave my ovaries obviously you still have the risk of ovarian cancer.  Just don't know what to do for the best.  Any advice welcome.

I had everything taken away but I had no choice as i they found I had cancer which they caught by removing everything I'm hrt and not had any problems yes they say you could get breast cancer but you just check yourself but I know others on here use hrt as well and as far as I know I've not heard anyone say it's caused any problems but if you have everything removed you won't need another op later on so if it'd been me given a choice I would have everything taken best of luck Lyn

Thank you for replying.  It's just such a big decision.  I suppose I can always have them removed at a later stage if I want to.

    Hi Caroline

I had a TAH in May. My consultant advised me to keep my ovaries a I am only 45 and I still had a use for them. She did remove my fallopian tubes as there is some evidence that this reduces the risk of ovarian cancer by 95%. I was more than happy with this as my mum had her ovaries removed and was put on the wrong dose of her and she got breast cancer.

My surgeon did say that if she felt there was anything wrong with them she would remove them, luckily they were fine. Glad I kept them.

    Good luck Claire x

Hi Claire, I am 42 and feel I am a little young to be dealing with HRT.  I wonder if my surgeon would consider removing just the tubes.  Are yu in the UK?

    Hi Caroline

I am 4 weeks post op for TAH and ovaries removed on my request! I had a lot of problems and a large cyst on my right ovarie, I asked my gynie to take them as I previously had surgery in September 2014 which failed so I said I did not want to come bk in the future for further surgery to gave them removed, I am 44 this month, it is early days and I was told that HRT was like being in a sweet shop and you have to try until you find what is compatatable for you x I feel what I am on is no good as getting hot sweats but crying all the time but I will find one that suits me x it is your decision in what it how you feel xx good luck

I kept my ovaries as i want to go through natural menopause (i'm 50), my surgeon said lets just remove the bit thats causing the problems which was my womb which was enlarged and full of fibroids.  No history of ovarian cancer in my family either so i went with him. Also he said leaving ovary and cervix makes recovery quicker as well

Hi Caroline. It really is a multiple choice question, isn't it?

It would depend on your age - if you are still in your 40's or younger, you might want to hang on to the ovaries so as not to throw you head first into your meno.

Also, family health history. If any of your female rellies had ovarian cancer, you might want to whip them out and not have to worry about them turning nasty on you at a later date.

Discuss these options with your consultant, and ask him why he is wanting to take the ovaries as well.

Have a chat with your Mum, Aunt, Grandmother if she is still around....gather some info to help you make the right decision.

    Keep us posted. x

Hi, I has TAH and BSO in February. After discussion with consultant I opted to have ovaries removed. Felt if going through such big op then only want to do it once! However, after op I found out one of ovaries stuck to side of womb so would've had to go anyway. I started hrt  patches 6 weeks post op. Yes, I had the sleepless nights, headaches, but not too bad and settled down once hrt right. I was 47 when I had op, but some people have to have this op at 27 so didn't dwell on age part too much as had to have the surgery and life better minus the fibroid and endometriosis. No more periods is a big relief! Just make sure you have all the info you need to make your decision. I didn't think twice about it, but that may just be me! Good luck , and as you say , it is a big decision so give yourself plenty of time to make right one and plenty of time after to recover.

Hi Caroline I'm in a very similar position to you not sure if to keep them or not although my consultant has said if there healthy I can keep them if that's what I wAnt, myself I'm a worrier so wondering if I will regret not having them taken out but the thought of a menopause scares me I did have a temporary menopause due to some injections I had and it wasn't to bad just the night sweats I wasn't keen on ,could you perhaps ask a relative female about there's menopause as I think they say you can be similar ,myself I'm edging toward having mine removed good luck hunny let us know what you decide ,Sue x

Hi, thank you for your comments.  I have spoken to my mum and she didn't have a problem with the meopause.  I have suffered with depression in the past and am really worried about that side of things to be honest.  I wouldn't wish that on my worst enermy.  I am thinking seriously about keeping them for the time being, and maybe getting regular checks to make sure everything is still health.
