Taken off 6-Mercaptopurine now

6-Mercaptopurine was diagnosed with CD just a year ago. Acute symptoms were stabilised with prednisolone. Thereafter I took Azathioprine for  2 weeks before having an awful reaction. From last September I was put on 100mg 6-Mercaptopurine and have enjoyed reasonable health without a flare up.

My monitoring blood tests indicated AST reading of 52 around New Year but this has risen sharply to 160 by today. Lately have felt stitch-like ache on right side level with navel and it never seems to go away now.

Just heard from clinic that my inflammation markers are fine but should discontinue 6-MP immediately to get the liver reading down.

Not sure where this is leading but thought I'd share in case you have had similar experience on this medication.

My best. neutral

Hi Pete, same story as mine. With the 6MP i had a really high reading for liver infection which was reversed by coming off completely. Was then put on 50mg of 6mp and Allopurinol every other day, unfortunately i reacted to that mixture too. I became really down and depressed, nauseous, extremely tired ALL the time.

Ive been to the GP and decided to just come off everything apart from the Pentasa. Several weeks now and fingers crossed im still well and will avoid a flare!

Having researched myself, they try you on all the cheaper drugs first however they just cause more problems.

I hope you find something that will help soon.

      Thanks for that Shal.

That's brave to drop all the meds. Were you on Pentasa all the time you were taking the other meds?

I'm asking also to see what may be ahead. Doc said 5 months ago if 6MP did not work we'd try Methotrexate next.

      Good luck

After all the side effects from previous meds im actually glad to be off them all, but I've always remained on the pentasa but i know that wont be enough. For now fingers crossed!

Ive not been tried on Methotrexate so let me know how that goes. ☺
