Taking 40mg Propranolol before stressful situations

Posted , 3 users are following.

I'm a 19 year old female and have just started taking Propranolol for anxiety - public speaking etc,

I've been trying to test it's effects before using them before the real thing, just wondering if I'm likely to actually notice anything?

All I have noticed is lightheadedness and maybe a slight headache a while after taking it?

Any recommendations?

I'm 5'4", 62kg

Not sure if it actually is stopping stuttering etc

Thanks!

Hi, I was told I may experience feeling light headed,  but that never happened. I was told it lowers blood pressure.  Maybe it's too strong for your condition?  Hope you feel better.

thanks smile I wasn't sure if it was too strong or not...I tried it out a while back and it made me feel really crappy, but I read stuff online and people said after taking it a few times that stopped happening, so I just gave it a few more goes and it seems to have worked I think, in lessening the bad effects, but hard to comment on it releiving stress without being able to try it in a stressful situation

    Hello Ana!

40mg may be too high a dose.  My GP prescribed 40mg for me and I found it much too high a dose.  My bp fell to 102/63, with a pulse rate of only 48 bpm, and I didn't feel well.  On reporting this, the GP seemed quite happy for me to adjust it lower until I hit on the right amount for me which is just 10mg.

ah really? I took 20mg just to see whether I felt any different and I definitely felt less sick etc, but also this seemed to be less the second time with trying 40mg, but I could just have been prepared and known what to expect? hard to say, what do you take it for? I'm unsure of how to tell whether it's doing anything to stop my body feeling stressed as I haven't yet used it in such a situation

Hi, I am also a 19 year old female who used to take propanolol and I noticed a massive reduction in my anxiety when I took 40mg, once a day for 9 months.  I would say for me the anxiety was still there but what changed was when I felt a panic attackcoming on/ the racing heart the propaolol would just stop the racing heart before it developed my body went into a full blown panic attack mode.  I didn't take it for public speaking though and j can't comment on its effectiveness in this area but generally it really helped me to control panic  attacks and I'm guessing that if you took it around 40 minutes before a speech giving it time to get in your system you should be fine.   It also may be worth looking into why you feel panicky when you give speeches and seeing a counsellor of some sort X
