Taking D Mannose for UTI with Warfarin?

Posted , 5 users are following.

My Granny has been struggling with a UTI for about a week now. For this shes been drinking lots of water and taking D-Mannose to help prevent infection. However shes been warned off cranberry products as she takes Warfarin for preventing blood clots. And as D-Mannose is an extract of Cranberry, we were wondering if it could be considered a risk to her?

Thanks for reading!

    Dear Emma 66521,

I've never taken D-Mannose, but have read on this site and elsewhere that it isn't very helpful. The use of cranberry ANYTHING to help with bladder/ kidney issues seems to be more of an old wives' tale than anything else, as it can actually cause problems in some situations. I've been told by regular doctors as well as bladder and kidney specialists that drinking LOTS of plain water is best. If your grandmother has actually been to the doctor and been diagnosed with a UTI, she would have most likely been given an antibiotic if the infection was bad enough to warrant treatment. If she didn't actually get a urine test and is simply self treating, maybe she should consider having a urine test to be sure. There are other conditions that mimic bladder infections, such as interstitial cystitis, and even chronic kidney stones, but the treatments for those conditions are very different from that of a bladder infection, except that in all 3, drinking a lot of water is good.

In looking back to your original question, though, if you know there is some cranberry in the D-Mannose, and because of the Warfarin she is not to be taking any form of cranberry, I guess I'd call a pharmacist to be sure, but it sounds like you already know the D-Mannose would interfere with the way the Warfarin works, and that is NOT a drug to mess around with. I hope you solve this problem and she feels better soon!

      Hi Cherie 52901,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Thats really good to know about D Mannose, was a bit sceptical my self about how useful it could really be. I will definitely take your advice and call a pharmacist to make sure.

      Many Thanks!

What D-mannose actually does is to stick to bacteria that causes UTI, making it easier to flash when urinating. Generally, it is safe as it is regarded as a natural sugar.

But if you are having some concerns then perhaps it may be better to try using probiotics instead. These are good bacteria, which help to fight off other bacteria and E.Coli which cause UTIs. Thus they help to provide relief from UTI and also stop it from recurring. Probiotics are usually found in yogurts, kefir, fermented milk, kombucha and a whole lot of other foods. You can check it out.

Or she may yet again try using probiotic supplements. In this case, my advise will be to get natural supplements. I personally would recommend Flourish Probiotics. I have used some and they are very effective,

This is a natural combination of healthy bacteria that support digestion, urinary tract and gut health, as a result strengthening the immune system.

And great job with the water drinking. Keep it up
